Description Philippe Didier 2012-04-21 15:31:15 CEST
Description of problem:

Computer with
ASUS M2N SLI mainboard
Nvidia Geforce 210 graphic card
two internal SATA harddisks (using sata_nv module)
one internal IDE harddisk (using pata_amd module)
one external usb harddisk
one external firewire harddisk
one internal IDE DVD writer (using pata_amd module)
one internal IDE DVD reader (using pata_amd module)

I use the DVD writer slot to boot the liveCD

After booting from Beta3 KDE LiveCD every partition of internal harddisks is automatically mounted, and accessible... (fat32, ntfs, ext3, reiserfs, ext4)

Any external disk or usb stick is detected and appears in the notification applet (allowing to automatically mount and see the content in Dolphin or konqueror)

Wonderful !!!!

But when I insert a CDrom in the free DVDreader slot it doesn't appear anywhere
(the workaround is to mount it as root before access to its content in dolphin or konqueror and unmount it after)

When I insert an audioCD it doesn't appear and there'no way to read it with KSCD or to access to it through the "audiocd service" in konqueror
I didn't found any workaround for audioCD

(when I use MCC : the DVD writer and DVD reader are present and identified as /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd)
Comment 1 Manuel Hiebel 2012-04-21 23:01:49 CEST
seems a duplicate of bug 5518 (two or more dvds reader)
Comment 2 Philippe Didier 2012-04-22 16:43:26 CEST
Hello Manuel

I may say that's not a duplicate of bug 5518 :
I can boot with the beta3 KDE LiveCD in each of the slots (DVDreader or DVDwriter)

This liveCD is mounted and I can see its content in Dolphin or Konqueror in the /live/ directory

When I choose any partition of my hard disks in the left side of dolphin it automatically implies that this partition is mounted and a subdirectory automatically created in /media/
the mtab file is modified and I can see a new line for each partition :
dev/sdxx media/label_of_the_partition

Everything works fine even with external harddisks too... they appear in a notification little window and I can ask to mount them

The problem is only for the second DVD slot
There's no notification about the presence of a new media
In the directories tree there is no media/cdrom created when I insert a CD or DVD in the free slot
mtab is not modified

I need to manually mount the CD or DVD as root (mount /dev/hdd /media/cdrom or mount/hdc /media/cdrom) to see its content in dolphin or Konqueror ...

but this doesn't work for an audioCD : I can't mount it (I don't clearly remember the message ... it's something about bad superblock )

I don't know if it is specific for the use of the LiveCD as a live CD (I can't install Mageiabeta on my "production" computer :-( ) and can't say if the problem exists for an installed Mageia2

If this problem exist only for the liveCD use it's really a minor problem but it prevent to see if the kio-audiocd component works.

Maybe it could be linked to : bug 5536
    and to bug 4997
Comment 4 Dave Hodgins 2012-04-23 22:59:29 CEST
Try adding the kernel option rdloaddriver=pata_amd
and see if the drives become /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1.

Comment 5 Philippe Didier 2012-04-24 03:10:53 CEST
Thanks Dave and congratulations :
it works now with this kernel option (using my livecd as a livecd)

The liveCD appears as an external media (the same way as an usb stick or external harddisk in a notification message)

When I insert a CDrom in the second slot it appears in the notification windows and can be accessed with dolphin or konqueror

When I insert an audioCD It appears and I am proposed to use amarok or Kscd or Dolphin ... the content is displayed But I can't hear it

If I install VLC everything works fine : I can hear the audiocd... (need to ask to use /dev/sr1 instead of /dev/cdrom per default)

the workaround is OK

But I see now problems with gstreamer and kio-audiocd ! (new bug report to do)
Comment 6 Dave Hodgins 2012-04-24 05:16:13 CEST
As that workaround works, I'll close this bug as a duplicate of bug 4997.

Comment 7 Philippe Didier 2012-05-28 17:17:32 CEST
This bug may be linked with :
bug 4997
bug 5536

I reopen it with a new title

I try to sumarize :

Computer with
ASUS M2N SLI mainboard
Nvidia Geforce 210 graphic card
two internal SATA harddisks (using sata_nv module)
one internal IDE harddisk (using pata_amd module)
one external usb harddisk
one external firewire harddisk
one internal IDE DVD writer (using pata_amd module)
one internal IDE DVD reader (using pata_amd module)

1) using a burned cdrom
a) I use the DVD writer slot to boot the KDEliveCD (and not to install):
when Mageia is working :
if I insert a cdrom in the dvd reader slot I can't see its content
(in /dev/ I can find hdc and hdd but no sr0 nor sr1)

b) I use the DVD writer slot to boot the KDEliveCD with the kernel option rdloaddriver=pata_amd
I may read the content of the dvdreader
(in /dev/ I can find sr0 and sr1)

2) using a usb pen
a) without kernel option no access to the dvdreader or dvdwriter

b) with the kernel option rdloaddriver=pata_amd
I may read the content of a cdrom or dvdrom in any dvdslot

NB
This bug was considered as a duplicate of bug 4997 but bug 4997 is about an installed Mageia2

This is still valid for the final Mageia2 LiveCD (for the next Mageia3 it needs to be resolved)
For Mageia2 there may be a workaround proposed in the Errata

NB (bis)
I tried several times to use the LiveCD with the usb pen (with kernel option rdloaddriver=pata_amd each time)
and a weird thing happens
in /dev/ some links are created to sr0 and sr1...
but they are not always the same :

I may have only /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd linked to sr0 (no /dev/cdrom1 nor /dev/dvd1)

or /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd and /dev/cdrom1 and /dev/dvd1 all of them linked to sr0

or /dev/cdrom /dev/dvd linked to sr0 and /dev/cdrom1 /dev/dvd1 linked to sr1

I can't understand the reason of this alea

Comment 8 Philippe Didier 2013-01-04 02:33:01 CET
I think we can quite close this bug as resolved fixed for Mageia3 beta1 Live KDE:

The pata_amd module is automatically installed and there is no more wrong entry in /dev/directory :
neither /dev/hdxn for the IDE harddisk partitions
nor anymore /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd for the IDE cd-dvd reader and the cd-dvd writer

IDE Harddisk is considered as sdc
cd-dvd writer is considered as sr0
cd-dvd reader is considered as sr1

No more need to use the workaround: "add the kernel option rdloaddriver=pata_amd".
(using f6)
same as bug 7913

It will be more simple to close this bug report as RESOLVED FIXED

The only remaining problem concerns the missing links from /dev/sr0 to /dev/dvd to /dev/dvdrw and to /dev/cdrw
and from /dev/sr1 to /dev/cdrom1 and to /dev/dvd1

It will be easier to use bug 8524 for this little secondary problem (it seems to be a udev bug... not a module bug)
