Description Thomas Andrews 2017-09-09 02:36:05 CEST
Description of problem:

Somehow, and I don't know when or how it was done, the default print mode for Gwenview and Okular on my computer has been changed from "color" to "grayscale" and I can't change it back.

Hardware involved: Intel motherboard with Core2Duo processor with 8GB RAM, HP Deskjet 5650 with duplexer attachment, and HP Officejet 6110. Both printers were installed using the hplip option presented in MCC. The Deskjet is the default printer, but the bug affects both of them.

Default printer properties show "color" as the default output mode in MCC, the HP Toolbox, and in the CUPS "Manage Printing" app, yet when printing an image from Gwenview the default remains set to "grayscale." It can be changed, but reverts back to "grayscale" for the next session.

There may be a command line option or a config file edit to address this: I don't know. But, for users like myself, who prefer to avoid the command line, at least one of the GUIs should be able to take care of it, and none of them do.

It's possible that I set the printers to default to grayscale the last time I installed them (and Mageia 6). I just don't remember - I made so many new installs of Mageia 6 during testing.

If I did, that would mean that changing the defaults later through MCC doesn't "take" when it comes to the print dialog for Gwenview, Okular, and other Plasma apps, and that's where the problem lies.

I would think that a good way to test this would be to delete a printer, then install it again, this time with "color" as the default. But is it that simple? If it's like most deletions, a vestige of the old printer information remains behind, and most probably would be re-used when the printer is re-installed. Is there an easy way to delete a printer and eliminate all traces that it had ever been installed before re-installing it?

Hello,
Perhaps a similar problem, but not the same.
Choosing "grayscale" in Okular when printing a PDF document is without effect.
And also in gwenview.

Yes, I'm seeing the same thing in Okular after updating to Plasma 5.12.2. "Options" indicates that grayscale has been selected; yet when it prints it is in color.

Somehow the default has returned to "color," but I did have to delete and re-install hplip after a paper jam a few weeks ago. The default may have changed then.

Have you tried set it to grayscale in the MCC printer setting GUI?
Does the print then obey?

Can you see those settings in cups and do they work there?
http://localhost:631/printers/ > click your printer > Administration drop down > Set Default option > you see what...

The dropdown option "Modify printer" is kind of reinstalling it i think.

Things have changed since the update to Plasma 5.12.2. For one thing, Gwenview seems to be no longer affected, only Okular.

I'm assessing the new situation, and will file a new bug when I have a bit more information about what's going on.

I have seemingly related problems with okular and think your other bug discusses the same thing: https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20062
including a probable path to resolution, imo.

Discovered later, Okular was unable to override the settings made with the HP Device Manager gui. Reported in https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22819. I am marking this bug as a duplicate of that one, which, unfortunately, I don't expect to see fixed.

I believe Bug 20062 is related, but not exactly the same as this one.
