For example, if you add /usr/share to your collection, then add the tracks it finds there to your playlist, and try to play it, it seems to handle tracks that are at least 6 seconds or so fine, but the shorter ones cause all sorts of issues. It often will just stop, sometimes it'll go into a loop, there's all sorts of visual artefacts, etc. It doesn't matter whether you use pulseaudio or not, or whether you use phonon-gstreamer, phonon-vlc, or phonon-xine. I have a build of our amarok 2.7.0 package that I use on Mageia 2, so I installed it in my Mageia 2 VM and it handles short tracks just fine, so some other component is causing the problem. I have no idea what it could be.
Is this a gstreamer bug like in Bug 10762?

Hi David, just to clarify, did you log into KDE and logged out of it after switching the Phonon backend? Also, does it also happen in x86-64? I can try checking. Regards, -- Shlomi Fish
With amarok-2.7.90-1.mga4 on x86-64 Cauldron I can play all the sounds from /usr/share/sounds fine one after the other - without Pulseaudio. Are you using Pulseaudio by any chance? Regards, -- Shlomi Fish
Hi Shlomi, As I recall, I didn't log out of KDE after switching the phonon backend, but I should be able to try it again at work this week now that we finally have an empty classroom. I don't have x86-64 mirrored, so I won't be able to try that. I did try it with and without pulseaudio, I do remember that.
Shlomi, Thanks for the tip of logging out of KDE when switching phonon backends. With amarok 2.7.1 and phonon-vlc, it works perfectly (amarok 2.7.0 crashed). With amarok 2.7.1 and phonon-xine, it doesn't play any sound and crashes quickly. With amarok 2.7.1 and phonon-gstreamer, it doesn't work very well, as described in the initial bug report.
Summary: amarok can't handle short tracks => amarok can't handle short tracks when using phonon-gstreamerSource RPM: amarok-2.7.0-1.mga3.src.rpm => phonon-gstreamer-4.6.3-1.mga3.src.rpmVersion: Cauldron => 3See Also: (none) => https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10762
So it seems this is a phonon bug and not amarok ?
phonon-gstreamer specifically (of course the problem could lie in gstreamer itself, technically)
where can we find such a file ?
/usr/share, as I said in Comment 0. Just add that directory to your collection, and then right-click on your collection on the left and choose Add to playlist.
This bug still persists in Cauldron. Maybe not quite as bad as Mageia 3, but still doesn't work very well with phonon-gstreamer. It's still fine with phonon-vlc. There are newer versions of the relevant software out there, though I haven't built them so I don't know if they help: gstreamer1.0 1.2.1 upstream phonon 4.7.0 mdv/debian phonon-gstreamer 4.7.0 mdv phonon-vlc 0.7.0 mdv qt-gstreamer 0.10.3 fedora

Hi David (again :)), can you check if it's still valid in current cauldron?
Keywords: (none) => NEEDINFO
Sure. I'll check hopefully this weekend or at the very least at work next week.
Sorry for the delay. Trying to switch to gstreamer on my VM at home corrupted my Amarok settings to the point where it would no longer launch Amarok without crashing and I didn't have time to fix it. I was able just now to confirm this issue still exists in Cauldron on a physical machine at work.

Replacing "MGA3TOO" with "MGA5TOO" because MGA3 was End-of-Lifed.

What's the status in latest cauldron?
(In reply to Samuel Verschelde from comment #16) > What's the status in latest cauldron? No reply.... is it still valid in Mga5?

Yes. This seems to me to be unlikely to get fixed. Fortunately phonon-vlc (now the default) avoids the problem.
@ shlomi I don't know why we forgot to assign this bug. Doing so, now.

In Mageia 8 now, I can't even figure out how to get to the Phonon settings. Also, while aplay works, Amarok has no sound. For this VM if I choose ICH97, nothing works, but with Intel HD Audio I can get some sound. ogg123 on the console is extremely choppy. The new default Plasma mixer (and systemsettings) doesn't see any audio devices, but KMix still works. What a mess.
It appears that Qt5 phonon-vlc and the default Plasma mixer do not work in Mageia 8 when PulseAudio is not in use, confirmed on a VM and physical machine. I can't find where to change the Phonon backend.
In Strawberry you can select the Phonon backend, and while you do get messages in the console about the VLC backend not being able to connect to Pulse, it still plays sound.
