You should seriously consider not installing kmail by default in KDE: it contains severe and easily reproducible data bugs: https://kdeatopensuse.wordpress.com/2012/03/08/help-on-kde-pim-data-loss-bugs/ Thunderbird can be a nice alternative in the default installation. A warning in the release notes also seems appropriate for users upgrading from older versions.

Not installing kmail won't prevent users to use it all. In all case a note should be indeed added (could you add it ?) on errata to ensure that users are aware of this specific bugs ? Currently kmail is not available at all on live-cd (due to space issue), but from my point of view it still should be available on the dvd for kde's installation. Also regarding thoses bugs : 293768 => it's reproducible but there's a need for a network problem to trigger it & specific action to trigger it. (i did not reproduce it with 4.8.0 earlier but since i was not able to use a cauldron box since then i'm not sure regarding 4.8.1 status currently) 295484 => it's does not seems reproducible all the time, if you can reproduce it could you add some info on the bugs ? 286043 seems quite similar to the previous one (yep one user said it was not). & for 281704 i did not reproduce it all when it seems to be available since 4.7.4 at least (so probably earlier)

> Not installing kmail won't prevent users to use it all. No, but it will at least make it more likely that new users will not start using it. Installing an application by default means that you think this is the best possible choice for most users and that you recommend new users first trying that application. That seems a bad signal if we know that it has the potential to eat people's e-mails. These kind of bugs is also the reason why Debian Wheezy/Sid is still shipping kdepim 4.6 even though KDE is more recent.

Using kdepim 4.4 or more precisely kmail. & kadressbook. from 4.4.11 is safe, switching to kmail 4.6.x is just from my point of view the worse choice you can made due to kmail state in 4.6.x but you probably won't get loss mail eventually since you won't be able to use kmail at all... I was not able to stick to kmail 4.4. with mga 2 ( like we did in mga1 with kde 4.6) due to the )changes introduced in kdepimlibs 4.7.x ( & others dependency like nepomuk world
mikala an opinion ? As lead of the kde team, do you think we can provide kmail 4.8.x by default ?

Of course we can. As said in comment #1 only the first one seems to be "easily" reproducible but with a specific trigger. Switching back to the 4.4 is not possible ( due to kdepimlibs change & also because it is long dead upstream ) the solution to switch to the 4.6 is another way to not use kmail at all ( severe bugs has been fixed and upstream only ask to move on and not to stick with an older release ). Also 4.8.2 also provides an important fix for CPU usage in nepomuk email feeder
Ok then we will ship kmail in Mageia 2
