Description fabien henon 2012-01-31 13:29:38 CET
Installation went fine.
The reboot went fine until X tries to start.
All I get then is a screen filled with purple and yellow. I tried both normal and failsafe boot.

my "lspci -v" is attached

Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please attach your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link below.

Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf whatsoever and let X11 autodetect your display and video card? Attach to this bug /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt as well, please.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

My reply from yesterday has disappeared. Never mind.

Please find my xorg.conf attached.
Please note that I get the same result with or without xorg.conf : I get the screen filled with greyis yellow.

Please find attached my dmesg attached. It might help.

I also tried another thing :
I replaced "ati" with "radeon" in xorg.conf and I added nomodeset at the end of
"linux /boot/vmlinuz BOOT_IMAGE=linux-nonfb root=UUID=aa933720-4de5-40f5-9fbf-794bb56febab resume=UUID=51c1920d-3e14-425f-8b8d-b3b7f710f61c nomodeset"
in /boot/grub/grub.cfg
I got X working for a split second then the computer freezes I have to reboot with the on-off button

I also tried to boot into a console (without the starting the display manager) but it did not work. Setting id:3:initdefault: in /etc/inittab did not work. What should I do ?

I forgot to add :
Xorg.0.log remains empty whatever I do

Hi,

I tried to boot a live cd of mageia 1 (64 bits and with kde) : It boots fine until the displmay manager is started.

I get a blank screen, then the computer freezes : I can't switch to any tty, ctrl+alt+backspace and delete does not work.

maybe same as https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1471#c2

can you do bootloader-config --action rebuild-initrds ?

When I add radeon.modprobe=0 at the end of the boot line, it works. Display manager works, but I get a slid screen (see attached image)

Then, when I type in a console as root,
bootloader-config --action rebuild-initrds

I get the result in the attached file

When I reboot, I still get the fuzzy screen.
-> to me bootloader-config --action rebuild-initrds does not change anything

Actually the bug does not show here. I get Mageia 'start' button at the bottom but in the middle of the screen. The right part of the screen is on the left. I will have to take a picture with a digital camera if you do not know what I mean

bootloader-config --action rebuild-initrds did not change anything because the radeon firmware could not be found
-> I copied all the files I found in /lib/firmware/radeon from another distro (Mint 12) and pasted all of them to the Mageia partition.

I reboot with radeon.modeset=0

then typed
bootloader-config --action rebuild-initrds
I did not get any messages about radeon firmware missing

I rebooted (without the "radeon.modeset=0" option)

and it WORKS ! (and the screen is no longer split vertically)
Comment 14 Manuel Hiebel 2012-02-15 23:56:30 CET
was radeon-firmware installed ?

(so it's a duplicate of the bug 1471)

I cannot install anything (I have a hald bug that prevents me from installing anything) > no radeon-firmware was installed
