Comment 1 Thomas Andrews 2022-11-20 23:43:10 CET
MGA8-64 Plasma, AMC Phenom II X4, AMD HD 8490 graphics.

bbswitch and virtualbox modules built and installed without incident, as did dkms-rtl8192eu from updates_testing. (Bug 31111) The broadcom-wl module failed to build. Other than that, there were no installation issues.

After the reboot, I was able to get my rtl8192eu device to connect to my network. I surfed the web with Firefox, watched a bit of a video with VLC, loaded a Libreoffice Calc spreadsheet. The only vbox guest on this install is a Windows XP created to test a previous update, and it runs fine, or as fine as XP ever runs.

Except for broadcom-wl, this looks OK on this hardware.

Comment 2 Morgan Leijström 2022-11-22 18:09:17 CET
Problem with dkms for nvidia-current.

After successful test of kernel-5.15.79-1.mga8 https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=31148#c13

__Update command:
LC_ALL=C sudo urpmi.update 'Core Backports Testing' && LC_ALL=C sudo urpmi --search-media 'Core Backports Testing' lib64bpf1 cpupower kernel-userspace-headers kernel-desktop-latest kernel-desktop-devel-latest virtualbox-kernel-desktop-latest

__first boot
Said it was building dkms nvidia for a minute, then popup dialogue to reboot, let the 30s timeout pass and it rebooted.

When booting i noticed it was using nouveau
(text mode, much more text lines displayable than when system is using nvidia)
Then a long delay about a minute in log, then:
nov 22 17:21:20 svarten.tribun dkms-autorebuild.sh[1208]: (bad exit status: 10)
nov 22 17:21:20 svarten.tribun dkms-autorebuild.sh[1208]: Build failed. Installation skipped.

Afters some more seconds it booted to login and desktop, using nouveau.

dkms-2.0.19-43.1.mga8

(dkms-nvidia-current-515.65.01-1.mga8.nonfree.x86_64.rpm is from mirror/mageia/distrib/8/x86_64/media/nonfree/backports/)

drakx11, clicked the default driver, question popup for proprietary driver, OK.

$ dkms status | grep nvidia
nvidia-current, 515.65.01-1.mga8.nonfree, 5.19.16-desktop-1.mga8, x86_64: installed
nvidia-current, 515.65.01-1.mga8.nonfree, 5.15.79-desktop-1.mga8, x86_64: installed
nvidia-current, 515.65.01-1.mga8.nonfree, 5.15.74-desktop-1.mga8, x86_64: installed

meh.
rebooted anyway:
same problems: first boot tried to build, second say it fail.

(One variation another bug: this time I did not let the reboot dialogue count down but clicked OK and it said it was rebooting, but failed to shut off power, i had to press main board reset.)

Well the system is useable running nouveau.

BOINC detects CUDA and OpenCL. But no suitable work unit to try.

Tested on host: Plasma desktop; using Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Ktorrent, Nextcloud client, Syncthing, Firefox ESR (video ok) java program FriBOK, Flatpak program Firefox and KiCad...

Tests OK as VirtualBox Host: all three guests running concurently (and BOINC too)

Guest 1: my usual MSW7pro-64, tests OK: dynamic guest window resizing, bidirectional clipboard, host shared folders both bidirectional and write protection checked, USB2 memory stick read&write (using upstream extension pack) USB2 chip programmer Conitec Galep-5, video playing OK in Firefox, drag file from host Dolphin to guest Explorer.

Guest 2: BOINC LHC@home ATLAS simulation virtual machine 3CPU.

Guest 3: Mageia 8 -64, Xfce per below

---

mga8-64 Xfce, running as the VirtualBox guest 3 above:

kernels 5.15.74-desktop-1.mga8, updated and rebooted to 6.0.9-desktop-1.mga8.

Firefox surfing and plays video. drakrpm to update. Plugged in USB flash stick in host, checked it in VritualBox guest window frame menu to share, the partitions icons popped up on xfce desktop, and I could read and put new files. Bidirectional shared clipboard. Dynamic desktop resizing.

The updated broadcom-wl driver module now builds successfully with the 64-bit version of this kernel, and functions as expected with the 32-bit server kernel.
Comment 8 Thomas Andrews 2022-11-26 00:32:27 CET
I have replaced the install I used on Foolishness, my 32-bit Dell Inspiron 5100, to test these backported kernels with a Cauldron install, but for what it's worth, Foolishness has no problems with the 6.0.9 kernel-desktop in Cauldron.
