MGA8-64 MATE on Acer Aspire 5253 No installation issues. After reboot run into old grub2 problem in that the new kernel is not the default choice. I had to remove an older version of the kernel (65) and run boot options in MCC to get the new kernel as default. This is not a regression in se, this problem exists since ages.... Tested different file types OK, wifi OK, access to NFS-shares works. Tested wifi HP scanner and Epson scanner remote on my dektop PC. All OK.

mga8, x64 Comment 1 indicates that the latest virtualbox kernel has been installed but virtualbox itself seems to be out of sync. $ rpm -qa | grep -i virtualbox virtualbox-7.0.2-1.1.mga8 virtualbox-kernel-5.15.79-server-1.mga8-7.0.2-1.2.mga8 virtualbox-kernel-5.15.79-desktop-1.mga8-7.0.2-1.2.mga8 virtualbox-kernel-desktop-latest-7.0.2-1.2.mga8 dkms-virtualbox-7.0.2-1.1.mga8 virtualbox-kernel-server-latest-7.0.2-1.2.mga8
(In reply to Len Lawrence from comment #3) > mga8, x64 > Comment 1 indicates that the latest virtualbox kernel has been installed but > virtualbox itself seems to be out of sync. Nope. it just looks that way :) > $ rpm -qa | grep -i virtualbox > virtualbox-7.0.2-1.1.mga8 > virtualbox-kernel-5.15.79-server-1.mga8-7.0.2-1.2.mga8 > virtualbox-kernel-5.15.79-desktop-1.mga8-7.0.2-1.2.mga8 > virtualbox-kernel-desktop-latest-7.0.2-1.2.mga8 > dkms-virtualbox-7.0.2-1.1.mga8 > virtualbox-kernel-server-latest-7.0.2-1.2.mga8 you only need to check that the version matches (7.0.2) the -1.1.mga8 vs -1.2.mga8 comes from separate srpms: virtualbox (1.1) and kmod-virtualbox (1.2) and the kmod-* rel gets bumped on every kernel update, whereas the virtualbox only get bumped for bugfixes to that package version (or reset to 1.mga8 on next version update)
In reply to Thomas Backlund, comment 4 Thanks for the clarification Thomas. Sorry for the noise - clutching at straws to try to explain what is happening with attempts to install a virtualbox client... iso: Mageia-8-x86_64.iso Created vdi, assigned base memory. Started the installation, custom partitions. Laid out the disk partitions - /, swap, /home, partition table written to disk. Attempted to format them and ran into this: "Can't call method val on an undefined value." From then on it was a continuous loop always ending up with the same error message. Back to install; tried preformatting the partitions in expert mode, mounted them and hoped to continue but the installer insisted on having something to format, usually /home but it still failed, every time.
ah, yeah that could be a "regression" from the new virtualbox 7... maybe drakx is mis-detecting something from the new virtual machine... I guess flipping to alt-f3 or f4 or the drakx log could show where it fails... I see if I find some time next week to try installing a new vm... if you have a Mageia 8 live iso image, you could try to do the install from that and see if that works...
Yes, I am trying a mageia8 classic install on another machine and that seems to be running without a hitch using the older (1.1) SRPM. The iso used on the faulty installation was the same one, copied to the new machine.
Shall try to catch the error by repeating the procedure and switching to a terminal. Thanks.
Created attachment 13523 [details] Installation log for new client
Back to the faulty installation. Resumed from saved machine state. Tried to get past the formatting stage - nogo. Consoles not available. Trying to find something relevant in the log. No idea. Saved the log and compressed it for attachment. It records both sessions.
Darn. Thomas, just noted your suggestion about a Live iso - willdo.

Tested on an MGA8-64 Plasma system, AMD Phenom II X4, AMD HD 8490 graphics, Atheros-based wifi, with a driver installed for an rtl8192eu device. No issues noted. Also tested on an HP Probook 6550b, i3, Intel graphics, Broadcom wifi, MGA8-64 Plasma install, and MGA8-32 XFCE install using the server kernel. Tested using the broadcom-wl driver update candidate. No issues noted on either of these, either. I did not yet test VirtualBox 7.0.4 on any of these systems.
