Comment 1 Thomas Backlund 2019-12-06 21:07:01 CET
Note that if you use nvidia940, you need the update in bug 25828 installed first

Depends on: (none) => 25828

Comment 2 Thomas Backlund 2019-12-06 21:10:56 CET
This one also depends on the virtualbox update in bug 25829

Depends on: (none) => 25829

Comment 3 Len Lawrence 2019-12-08 23:12:19 CET
CPU: 10-Core: Intel Core i9-7900X type: MT MCP speed: 2442 MHz
Machine: Type: Desktop Mobo: ASUSTeK model: TUF X299 MARK 2 v: Rev 1.xx
Graphics Device-1: NVIDIA GP102 [GeForce GTX 1080 Ti] driver: nvidia v: 430.50
RAM: 31.05 GB

Installed kernel-desktop-5.4.2-1 and the virtualbox packages. nvidia rebuilt at boot time but no login screen. Could log in from a virtual console.

Reporting this from a different partition.

Comment 4 Thomas Andrews 2019-12-08 23:53:00 CET
Athlon X2, 8GB RAM, Geforce 210 graphics, Atheros wifi.

Updated the nvidia340 driver first and checked it out under kernel 5.3.13, then did the same with Virtualbox. (Note that I do not have dkms-virtualbox installed, in order to properly test the pre-built kmods)

All looked good. Then I came after this kernel.

The following 6 packages are going to be installed:

- cpupower-5.4.2-1.mga7.x86_64
- kernel-desktop-5.4.2-1.mga7-1-1.mga7.x86_64
- kernel-desktop-devel-5.4.2-1.mga7-1-1.mga7.x86_64
- kernel-desktop-devel-latest-5.4.2-1.mga7.x86_64
- kernel-desktop-latest-5.4.2-1.mga7.x86_64
- kernel-userspace-headers-5.4.2-1.mga7.x86_64
- virtualbox-kernel-5.4.2-desktop-1.mga7-6.0.14-10.mga7.x86_64
- virtualbox-kernel-desktop-latest-6.0.14-10.mga7.x86_64

All packages installed cleanly. Warm boot with auto-login proceeded without incident. Tried several apps, including VirtualBox, VLC, and Firefox. Using Firefox with this system to write this report.

All looks good, no issues noted. Looks OK on this hardware.

Same hardware as Comment 4, different 64-bit Plasma system. This time, I updated the nvidia340 driver, virtualbox, and kernel-desktop all at the same time.

The following 13 packages are going to be installed:

- cpupower-5.4.2-1.mga7.x86_64
- dkms-nvidia340-340.107-12.mga7.nonfree.x86_64
- kernel-desktop-5.4.2-1.mga7-1-1.mga7.x86_64

- nvidia340-doc-html-340.107-12.mga7.nonfree.x86_64
- virtualbox-6.0.14-2.mga7.x86_64

- x11-driver-video-nvidia340-340.107-12.mga7.nonfree.x86_64

All packages installed cleanly. After rebooting, I performed the same tests as in Comment 4, with the same results. No issues noted.
Comment 9 Thomas Andrews 2019-12-10 00:11:09 CET

Dell Inspiron 5100, 32-bit P4, 2GB RAM, Radeon 7500 (RV200) graphics, old Atheros wifi, 32-bit Xfce system using the desktop kernel.

Updated cpupower, kernel-desktop, kernel-desktop-latest. Packages installed cleanly.

After reboot, there were so many video glitches on the desktop as to make it unusable. Missing pixels, mostly, but as the cursor was moved around icons would change, with pixels returning and going away again. The background photo was stable.

Rebooting back into kernel-desktop 5.3.13 restored the display to normalcy.

My personal speculation from the outside looking in is that the "radeon" video driver needs to be re-built for the 5.4 series kernel.

I have a 64-bit machine that uses a MUCH newer AMD gpu, and I will try updating that tomorrow.

Dell Dimension e520, core 2 Quad, 4GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 8490 graphics. Running both 64-bit and 32-bit Plasma systems, each using the desktop kernel.

The packages for both systems installed cleanly, and after rebooting there were no issues noted in either system. So, in general the AMD/ATI graphics driver still seems to work on more modern hardware.

At first glance, one would tend to conclude that with this kernel the antiquated graphics card of the old Dell laptop in Comment 15 has finally become obsolete. I sincerely hope that is not the case.

No, radeon hw should still be supported for a very long time...

But there is some reports about newer kernels actually exposing bugs in the mesa stack, and suggested patches are available that I will see if we can apply to the upcoming mesa 19.3 update

Almost same experience here, with 32 bits Pentium M740 and RV250 : the kernel-desktop does not even boot, while kernel-desktop586 boots and shows this graphics glitches : almost only font rendering problems for me on IceWM session.

Launching teapot show some triangles miss the texture.

Slimmed down Mate partition on the same machine as reported in comment 11.
This partition had just been upgraded, without any problems, from mga6 to 7 via the red triangle applet. Warm reboots work fine. glmark2 runs.

OT. the glmark2 problem, often reported here, seems to resolve to a conflict between loaded and installed nvidia drivers. Once the mismatch is taken care of there is no more trouble.

So far the desktop works fine.

AMD A6 laptop - APU (hardware running cinnamon)

install cpupower
kernel-desktop-64bit

rebooted.

No issues to report.

Suspend works properly and the system has been stable for the last 20 hours of suspend + usage modes.
