Description of problem: When I in Okular, Opera or most other application selects File<Print, the program just freezes. Printing from Leafpad works. And CUPS can print test page (controlled by browsing to localhost:631.) I do not know where to continue tracing the problem... System mga4 b2 -64, KDE, updated 2013-12-17. I only have one printer, on network, is working with mga2 and 3, now also set up on two mga4 with same result. I set it up according to my own howto: https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=4203 Reproducible: Steps to Reproduce:
I wanted to try to reproduce this on a machine I installed Cauldron on here, but I tried to add a network printer in system-config-printer and once I put in the IP in the jetdirect dialog and hit Forward, it just sits there with a spinning pointer forever.

Thierry Vignaud fixed system-config-printer by updating it to 1.4.3, so I was able to set up a printer on my Cauldron test machine. Printing from Okular and Konqueror works just fine. So, at the very least this doesn't seem to be a general problem. system-config-printer gives a choice of PPDs I think it is, for some printers, and I had to choose the 2nd choice for this Xerox Phaser 6700DN to make it actually work. I noticed in your forum thread that yours is a Canon printer, which from what I understand is the hardest printer brand to get working on Linux typically, so maybe that's the cause of the problem.
Thank you David and Thierry. Will try more tests tomorrow. Canon have put effort to make this special hard to run configuration utility that handles ppd and settings, and two large manuals. I do not understand why they could not just ship the PPD and make it work with CUPS directly... Printer itself is wonderful once it runs. My former printer was a Xerox that was very easy to install, but the printer itself had problems with both hardware, software, and enourmous out of marketing spec standby power. Sigh. Why are printer manufacturers so out in the blue?
After updates and printer reinstalled i tried again. I realised Opera and Firefox prints OK, but not Okular nor LibreOffice. They do not carsh as i thought before, if i wait a cuple minutes after selecting file>print or similar, the printing dialog appears. During that long time kwin take 100% of one of two CPU! It again consumes 100% for a minute when i press print button in that dialog. But print never comes out. Summary: KDE applications hang selecting to print. Cups print test page OK. => KDE applications fail printing on this system, also new users. Gnome works.
On this Thinkpad R61, and my other mga4 test system, a thinkpad T61: Done: Todays updates, removed all printers, (also disabled all printer sharing on all computers on network just in case), defined again the printer using the canon utility. Result: On this system still KDE apps fail, also for new users. * Installed gnome: works for all users both computers! * This R61 system probably have some underlaying problem, that i think is related to KDE not able to start kwrite (on this system only) , see my thread: https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=6528 On the T61 system: all works (also KDE) -> Resolved fixed. (this printing problem)
Status: NEW => RESOLVEDResolution: (none) => FIXED
Also tried on the R61 to change from Nvdia to noveau driver, bot no luck on printing (it mysteriously enabled KDE to launch kwrite - bug 11946)
Update: now this R61 system start kwrite OK Printing from KDE apps still not working
