Description Peter D 2013-04-12 11:29:33 CEST
Description of problem:

Black screen!

Some vga modes don't work. When the default "vga=788" (equals 314 hex, 800x600x16) is passed to the kernel via grub's menu.lst, or "failsafe" (without a vga statement) the screen goes black and stays black.

Using F3 and editing the kernel parameter to "vga=ask" and selecting a differnt resolution bypassed the issue.

vga=788 works fine with Mageia 2.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Mageia 3 beta 4 i586, installed to hard disk from iso on DVD.

How reproducible:

Happens consistently on my one and only beta 4 installation, nVidia GF2 MX/MX 400, nouveau driver.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install
2. Boot

I don't think that I have faffed around with anything - will try another clean installation soon.

It boot to runlevel 3 now that "nokms" has been added to the kernel parameters. (And startx does start X.)
Comment 2 Peter D 2013-04-18 11:12:55 CEST
nokms solves the installed system problem, but not booting from a live CD.

Point 3 looks like a manifestation of bug 9711.
I think that I have seen bug reports related to points 2 and 5.

Booting the live CD requires;

1) interupt grub with F6, select default

2) UP ARROW to avoid an accidental installation

3) add "nokms"

4) add "3" <enter>

5) login as root, run XFdrake, de-select "enable translucency"

6) login as live, startx

My video card is a nVidia NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX400].

Hi Peter. Can you tell us if this bug still happens with Mageia 5 RC?

No reply and, apart from this question, no activity in this report since April 2013, closing as OLD

Feel free to reopen if the issue is still valid in Mga5 or cauldron.
