Description André DESMOTTES 2011-04-16 18:44:04 CEST
Mother board Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe with chipset wifi Realtek RTL 8187 embeded

Installing the wifi with the Mageia Control Center. The chipset Realtek RTL 8187 is correctly detected and in the next step, the SSID isn't detected, though it is broadcast. The following steps are chosen automatic and there is neither wifi icon in the task bar nor working wifi link.
Comment 1 Y.LE_NY 2011-04-16 23:17:15 CEST
Drivers information :

For Realtek RTL 8187 support, the following web page http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/rtl8187 said that the following chips are supported :
Supported Chips :
* with rtl8180 PCI driver:
        RTL8180
        RTL8185

* rtl8187 USB driver:
        RTL8187
        RTL8187B

but this said too that RTL8187SE PCI (0x10ec:0x8199) device will work with the r8187se driver (http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=tree;f=drivers/staging/rtl8187se)

2) The wikipedia page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_open_source_wireless_drivers#Driver_capabilities said that there 2 drivers for RTL8187xx chips :
rtl8180-sa2400 (http://rtl8180-sa2400.sourceforge.net/)
and rtl-wifi (http://sourceforge.net/projects/rtl-wifi/),
but I don't find any of these drivers in Mageia SVN.

Information needed by the Mageia developers :

What is the full name for your wifi chip ?
RTL8187 ? RTL8187B ? RTL8187SE PCI?

type in the console (for example kconsole) the following command line :
lspci

and report in this ticket the output.

Comment 3 Y.LE_NY 2011-04-17 20:20:24 CEST
In Mageia Kernel 2.6.38.3, there is RTL8187 driver
/lib/modules/2.6.38.3-desktop-1.mga/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtl818x/rtl8187/

Maybe this driver is not loaded on you computer.

Information needed by the Mageia developers :

type in the console (for example kconsole) the following command line :
with the root account :

1) lspcidrake -v | grep -i wireless

2) lspcidrake -v | grep -i network

3) lsmod

and report in this ticket the output.

Note : this is not the best solution, we need to fix RTL8187 driver loading in Mageia , but you can information by using ndiswrapper and windows driver on Linux for RTL8187 here :
* in french : http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/wifi_realtek_rtl8187#installer_le_driver_rtl8187_de_windows_98_avec_ndiswrapper
* in english : http://forum.aircrack-ng.org/index.php?topic=5755.0

ndiswrapper and the Windows drivers netrtvw (XP first and then 98) didn't work either.
