Description of problem: Automatic screen backlight regulation did not work (on my laptop) with default boot parameters, but became completely OK when I manually put "acpi_backlight=vendor" as a kernel boot parameter. I suggest to set this boot parameter by default for all netbook- and laptop-kernels. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Kernels. How reproducible: Always, with -desktop, tmb-laptop- and netbook-kernels (in Mageia1 x86_64). Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3.
This message is a reminder that Mageia 1 is nearing its end of life. In approximately 25 days from now, Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 1. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '1'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 1's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 1 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. -- Mageia Bugsquad

I actually found this solution in the Arch knowledgebase, and as of now I am using these additional parameters: acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor But if possible, could these parameters be added automatically if the installer identifies the computer as a laptop? Maybe, a dialog box could help? And one more question - why do you think this issue does not happen very often? I have not found many reports on this problem, but I am sure many people install desktop kernels without any additional parameters on laptops and everything works fine. Thank you.

That wont happend. It will break on a lot of hw There is only need to force vendor backlight when there is broken bios/buggy hw that does not comply properly with normal acpi backlight (or any of the hw-specific drivers in the kernel. However we can add automatic detection for your system if you attach the output of dmidecode
Created attachment 3057 [details] dmidecode Here is the output of dmidecode on my laptop. I am not sure if it worth adding only one model (not very new and not extremely popular), moreover, now I know how to fix this problem. So it is up to you, guys. And, of course, thank you for the explanations.
