Description Brett Ginsburg 2012-09-17 17:34:37 CEST
Description of problem:
Binary driver installation fails for my HP Color LaserJet cm2320fxi printer
Installation of a LaserJet 2200D succeeds

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
hplip 3.12.4

How reproducible:
Install hplip and dependencies
Install hplip-gui (for setup)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. run hp-setup
2. find cm2320fxi model printer
3. <NEXT>
4. Radio box => Download and install plug-in
5. Accept license agreement
6. Plug-in installation successful! <OK>
7. New box pops up:

"The printer you are trying to setup requires a binary driver plug-in and it failed to install.
Please check your internet connection and try again.
Visit http://hplipopensource.com for more infomation"

8. try to install using hp-plugin
9. Repeats steps 4-6 above
10. Try again to use hp-setup to add cm2320fxi printer (steps 1-7 repeat)

Major problem because this renders HP printers unusable.

This printer worked in kernel <=3.3.6 using the steps described above.

I posted this same information on Bug 5395 as it seems like mine is a duplicate.

I can run hp-plugin as root and the plugin installs with no errors.

If I run hp-setup, the printer is found and identified correctly, then hp-plugin runs, and I get a report of successful installation, but in debug mode I see this error:

hp-setup[24262]: debug: Unable to open file /var/lib/hp/hplip.state for reading.
hp-setup[24262]: debug: Plugin is not installed
error: The printer you are trying to setup requires a binary driver plug-in and it failed to install. Please check your internet connection and try again. Visit http://hplipopensource.com for more infomation.

/var/lib/hp does not exist.

Solved by creating /var/lib/hp as root.
Comment 3 Marcello Anni 2012-09-18 11:35:17 CEST
i have /var/lib/hp but the problem you described remains (hp laserjet 1018). the installation as root seems to go well, but when i plug the printer a new pop-up appears saying me to install the plugin. i have this issue since a lot of years

Marcello, have you tried to delete /var/lib/hp/hplip.state then rerun hp-setup?

May be that hplip.setup is corrupt and needs to be rewritten.

@Marcello: Please don't cross-post between different report for the same issue, makes things even harder to track ...
