Thanks for this, I'll take a look and see if I can reproduce.

As an FYI, my guest would cause an abort when kde sent the login sound to the audio device. I am using a VirtualBox-4.1.12-77245-Linux_amd64.run on my beta 3 host. Also have Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.1.12-77245.vbox-extpack installed.

Also wiped the Mageia vbox stuff from the guest and did the guest additions install from host's /opt/VirtualBox/additions/VBoxGuestAdditions.iso and it still aborts the guest.

Beta3 must have fixed something in runlevel3 because I used to get the abort when I added the user to the audio group and tried a startx. On beta3 I get the abort before adding user to audio group. Current solution is to disable audio in the guest setup before booting the guest.

OK, reproduced here. It seems that the Master channel on the alsa device is not controlled. This is likely due to the presence of a "Master Mono" control. I'll have to dig into the reasons for this.
Comment 4 Colin Guthrie 2012-04-29 15:23:29 CEST
Hmmm, actually it only happens on the AC97 audio. It doesn't happen on HDA (we correctly control Master on HDA devices).

No change in RC1 :(

No I didn't have any time to look at this.

Just change to HDA in the audio device setup and it should be fine. Also, a fresh install should also be fine as should an "alsactl init 0" command (it won't be perfect, but it'll be better than nothing).
Comment 7 mark stuart 2012-05-10 18:34:14 CEST
Thanks - here is what worked > your alsactl init 0 worked but only with AC97!
HDA did NOT work at all. No sound even with the alsactl trick.
Comment 8 IM Chengappa 2012-05-17 08:46:01 CEST
I could not make it work at all (Mageia RC on VB on Mandriva 2010), using all of the tricks above.

Comment 9 Colin Guthrie 2012-05-17 11:21:38 CEST
OK, so using HDA seems to be a bit broken at the ALSA level. I tried it here and it just hangs. Some sort of timer borkage it seems (maybe just model misdetection?)

Anyway, using the ICH 97 stuff works fine after issuing: "amixer set -c0 Master 90% unmute"

I'll have to work on a fuller fix for that, but not much I can do about the HDA (which did work not that long ago so I suspect some kind of kernel regression).

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

I'm not sure if bug 7701, which I reported is a
duplicate of this or not.

Can anyone having trouble with sound under virtualbox
try running pavucontrol, and change the output device
from Analog Mono Output / Amplifier
to LFE on Separate Mono Output / Amplifier

That's all I normally have to do, to get sound
working here.

That works for me only if I change the host's audio to Alsa.
runlevel3 on a 64 bit install using VirtualBox-4.2.0-80737-Linux_amd64.run with its extension pack.

This fixes the problem for me, thanks! :)
