Description Morgan Leijström 2012-04-19 00:16:47 CEST
Description of problem:
It is half baked.
Either try to complete the support, or have it not try.
And please document which boot* support what NIC types.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
boot.iso and boot-nonfree-iso a week ago, same result.

How reproducible: Always on my setup: Intel 2200BG module in a Thinkpad T42p.
(and i think I also tried an aetheros which failed but i did not log the details)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot boot.iso on a laptop with that wireless card (and no other working NIC)
2. Select to use HTTP resource, enter details, see it tries to bring up the network interface, but gives up after a half minute or so
3. Looking at the log @ Ctrl-AltF12 it looks like only one file is missing.
* BUT: if we fix this, would it then be able to really connect anyway to a wireless network? *

Looking at the logs - typing from looking @ screen on the uninstalled computer:

       Alt-F4; kernel log, relevant lines:
Code: Select all
lib80211: common routines for IEEE802.11 drivers
lib80211_crypt: registered algorythm 'NULL'
cfg80211: Calling CRDA to update world regulatory domain
libipw: 802.11 data/management/control stack, git-1.1.13
ipw2200: ipw2200-bss.fw request_firmware failed: Reason -2"
ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: -2"
ipw2200: failed to register network device
ipw2200: probe of 000:02:02.o failed with error -5
 I guess it is proprietary, thus not included?
A clear message stating that clearly would be an improvement.

     Alt-F3 also displays some interesting lines. relevant ones:
Code: Select all
* have to insmod ipw2200
* needs /lib/modules/3.3.1-desktop586-2.mga2/lib80211.ko.xz
* needs /lib/modules/3.3.1-desktop586-2.mga2/rfkill.ko.xz
* needs /lib/modules/3.3.1-desktop586-2.mga2/cfg80211.ko.xz
* needs /lib/modules/3.3.1-desktop586-2.mga2/libipw.ko.xz
* needs /lib/modules/3.3.1-desktop586-2.mga2/ipw2200.ko.xz
*         suceeded ipw2200
* NET: was expecting another network interface (broken net module?)

__Other info
There are several different images @
ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/mageia/distrib/cauldron/i586/install/images/
Two are mentioned @ https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Installation_Media#Network_Installs and boot-nonfree.iso is described @ https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Boot.iso_install#Before_you_start as having proprietary drivers.
Apparently it is not enough, see posts in [Mageia-discuss], example the post 12-04-16 21.42 subject: "What network interfaces are supposed to be supported by boot.iso?" OK, Frankly copied here:

not much for now, the iwl packages I have added is in order to test what
can be done... but that is still wip....

But it also carries kernel-firmware-nonfree wich is needed for some
disc controllers and even wired lan cards and so on...

the thing is, this iso should be very minimal, no in fact in the stage1, only basic wifi works (like without encryption), but using the boot-nonfree + start another iso from your harddisk/usb (for launch the stage2) should allow you to use all Wifi network (modulo the firmware of course)

Severity: normal => enhancement

Comment 2 Morgan Leijström 2012-04-19 00:52:31 CEST
I actually turned off encryption to try that too, but saw no difference.

I guess it fails earlier as i see the line:
ipw2200: ipw2200-bss.fw request_firmware failed: Reason -2"

What is meant by Reason -2 ? I just guessed it did not find firmware file?
So i tested boot-nonfree.iso but to same result.

If this is supposed to be working this is a bug.

Is the procedure " boot-nonfree + start another iso from your harddisk/usb (for launch the stage2) " documented somewhere?
( how to, and where to get stage 2. )

indeed

Not really, for my proposal you can read: https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Boot.iso_install#Installation_from_Hard_disk

And for launching only the stage2 I don't know, seems you need to make a fake mirror (more complex)

Comment 4 Frank Griffin 2012-04-19 02:31:43 CEST
We should really face up to the fact that regardless of the FOSS purity issues we are well past the point in time where "networking" doesn't include wireless.

The drivers and firmware don't, I think, really account for much space.

As for the philosophical issues, if FOSS purists can live with the fact that the BIOSes they boot are proprietary as long as the system they end up with is FOSS pure, then they can live with the fact that the installer that installs the system they end up with isn't FOSS-pure.

Even if you want to contend that space on the DVD is an issue, we are getting to the point where it is far more critical to support wireless networking than to include whatever low-end packages would be displaced.

We indeed lacks some firmware in boot-nonfree.iso
