Description François Jaouen 2012-04-06 08:43:25 CEST
Description of problem:
GNOME3 comes with NetworkManager (nm-applet to be precise) which is well integrated in gnome-shell. But mga2b1 installs also net_applet (that belongs to drakx-net-applet). net_applet is not well integrated into gnome-shell :
- it appears in the notification area who is hidden by default
- it doesn't fit very well with the look of gnome-shell
But the main problem is that there is 2 network managers on the desktop and it result an awkward behavior when connecting to a wifi network : 2 sets of popup dialog one for networkmanager and one for net_applet. Not a good user experience

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

- draxk-net-applet
- mageia installer

How reproducible:

1. install Mageia 2 beta 1 with GNOME desktop
=> Network Manager applet appears in the panel on the top right while net_applet
appears in the bottom right when the cursor is moved on bottom right of the
   screen.
2. connect to a wifi network (choose a network not already known in order to have
   to enter the wifi key).

Note : I set the severity to Major because it gives the feeling of bad integration of GNOME3 into Mageia (compared to fedora or ubuntu).

It's not completely useless. For example last time I checked NM didn't handle 3G cards and such like too well (could be wrong now)

As such it's sometimes nice to run both, but I think it would rather make sense to make net_applet check for nm and simply quit if it's running. It might not be 100% what the user wants, but it's a good indicator (and an easy patch).

Users can still run draxnet manually if they want.

Comment 3 François Jaouen 2012-04-07 14:32:38 CEST
The situation seems to imporve regarding the handling of 3G devices by NetworkManager if I refer to NM 3G supported devices page :

https://live.gnome.org/NetworkManager/MobileBroadband

btw, NM is actively developped by Redhat and is available as standard for Fedora (of course) and Ubuntu. At the same time, net_applet seems to be a bit forsaken by Mandriva (source :
http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/2011_Development) although it seems there are some plan for 2012 (source : http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/2012.0_specs_proposal#Internet_apps).

Hi,

This bug was filed against cauldron, but we do not have cauldron at the moment.

Please report whether this bug is still valid for Mageia 2.

Thanks :)

Cheers,
marja

I have opened bug 6675 about a wpa_supplicant + NetworkManager conflict.

This might be your bug as well.
