tty2 after typing bug (215.94 KB, image/jpeg)

Description Marja Van Waes 2012-04-05 21:40:39 CEST
Installing today with cauldron boot.iso fails after seeing the Hard Drive Detection screen.

In that screen (which never appeared before when installing Mageia 1 up till 2b2 a few weeks ago) it said:

> Found "Intel Corporation|82801DBM (ICH4-M) IDE Controller" interfaces
> Do you have another one?

I chose "No" and clicked next.

Then I saw a message:

> An error occurred
> An error occurred - no valid devices were found on which to create new
> filesystems. Please check your hardware for the cause of this problem.

lspcidrake -v gives (on an older install that was succesful):

> ata_piix : Intel Corporation|82801DBM (ICH4-M) IDE Controller
> [STORAGE_IDE] (vendor:8086 device:24ca subv:1014 subd:052d) (rev: 01)

I reproduced this 3 times, 3rd time with a fresh boot.iso (although I wouldn't have understand if the problem had been in the iso)

@ Thierry
The only reason I tried to install was to check whether all the anchors for the help files work correctly now. Is there a way I can continue install?

tty2 after typing bug

Typing bug in tty2 didn't work, btw, but I only tried once, if that should work I'll try that again.

Try adding the kernel option rdloaddriver=ata_piix, as per bug 4997, which
I suspect this is a duplicate of.

Well, thanks a lot, Dave :)

I had already started a new install when I read this, because I wanted to have a look at the hard drive detection screens again, but choosing "yes" in that screen and then choosing the ata_piix driver made installer continue.

I wouldn't have seen that driver if you hadn't suggested adding that kernel option (tbh, I didn't even see the piix one when I looked at that list before... I should maybe start drinking coffee again ;))

I'll set this bug to depend on 4997, because this one is for installer.

Depends on: (none) => 4997

Lol. Again, I've simply read and responded to the content of a
comment in bugzilla, without looking at who the message is from.
Sorry about that. Actually though, in this case, that was probably
a good thing, as, since I know you are aware of bug 4997, I wouldn't
have posted what I did, had I looked at who was reporting the bug.

Glad it worked. Yes, this bug report should be kept separate, as the
installer needs to load all of the various pata drivers before the ide
drivers.

I'm too tired right now, but tomorrow, I'll post a follow-up to my
invitation for more upgrade testers, with the info that the pata
override may be needed for the installer itself.

Heh. I figure at least 10 12 ounce mugs per day is a reasonable
minimum. :-) Have a good night.

Please continue posting in my bugs :)

Even before I started working for documentation team, I didn't manage to be aware of all important bug reports, and since I became documentation team leader, I hardly find a chance to look at bugs anymore. So no, I wasn't aware of bug 4997.

Besides, I have much less knowledge than you think, my knowledge is very fragmented, I know a bit here and there, but I still miss a lot of fundamental things I should now. Besides, I have habits of sometimes not seeing what is in front of me and of forgetting.

So even if I had been aware of bug 4997, I'm not sure I would have understood the underlaying issue is the same.

The only reason I started working for bugsquad, is because I knew I could do a better job than nobody ;)

Thx, you too :)
