Description Fadi Moukayed 2012-01-18 07:23:06 CET
(See https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1744 for further information)

Basically, the installer from the netinstall iso freezes after partitioning at the message "Searching for available packages" - the network install used to work fine previously so it is possible that the cause is a problem with the latest updates. The log on VT1 indicates that all hdlist files have been downloaded successfully.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot from the netinstall iso
2. Attempt to install Mageia
3. Watch the installer freeze

Thanks for the bug report.

Switch to console 2 (by pressing 'Ctrl-Alt-F2') during installation, put a floppy in floppy drive or plug a USB key/stick and type: 'bug' then press Enter. It will put report.bug on the floppy/key.

An then attach it in this bug

(you can also see info in the other tty)

Thanks, Manuel - I attached the log after trying once again with the ftp.mandrivausers.de mirror (With the same results)

By the way, does the shell on tty2 offer a 'top'-like command for monitoring process activity? I would like to see whether the installer went into some kind of deadlock, or if it is just trying to do something in the background (Which is somehow taking an absurd amount of time (?))
Comment 4 Manuel Hiebel 2012-01-18 18:23:46 CET
Ok thanks.

* wrote config file [/mnt/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg]
* urpmi completely set up

So seems there is no issue there.

* running: blkid -o udev -p /dev/sda

Thierry, I'm correct if I said than there is an issue with the harddrive ?

But maybe I'am wrong.

I would said no, since it's only a busybox, but I can be again wrong.

Ok, I erased the disk & attempted a reinstall - the above error is now gone, yet the installer still hangs. The drive is new and I checked the SMART values again, so I don't think it's a hardware issue (Other distros work fine)

Interestingly, the output from 'ps' indicates that /usr/bin/runinstall2 is consuming around 50-60% CPU, so the installer seems to be doing *something*, it never seems to finish, however - the installer is still unresponsive even after ~1h.

Wouldn't be the same as this wouldn't it?

Comment 7 Fadi Moukayed 2012-01-19 11:38:25 CET
@William: I don't think it is - this bug is about the netboot iso, not the DVD. I still haven't tested whether the same problem occurs on the Magia 2 alphas.
Comment 8 Fadi Moukayed 2012-01-24 11:02:41 CET
The netboot iso of Mageia 2 alpha3 works fine without any issues on the same machine, might I add (Just tested). I still have no clear idea why this happens on Mageia 1, but as it stands, the network install is broken for the current stable release.

Was there any drastic changes / fixes in the drakx installer from Mageia 1 -> Mageia 2 which might have affected this issue?
Comment 9 Manuel Hiebel 2012-01-24 16:04:11 CET
Yep there is lot of improvement and fix for drakx-installer
http://svnweb.mageia.org/soft/drakx/trunk/perl-install/NEWS?revision=2772&view=markup

But I don't know with one it can be.

Ok to close ?

As a workaround for mga 1, you can use the dual iso.
Comment 10 Fadi Moukayed 2012-01-25 17:50:11 CET
Yeah, it seems that there is nothing that can be done about this... Well, at least it doesn't happen on mga2.

@Manuel: Ok to close, not sure what it should be tagged with, though - WONTFIX? I'll leave it up to you. Thanks.
Comment 11 Manuel Hiebel 2012-01-25 17:57:55 CET
It's more an "Resolved in the next release" but well, let's go for the fixed :)

thanks
