Description Curtis Hildebrand 2012-01-15 07:38:52 CET
Description of problem:

I made a clean install of Mageia from Cauldron. After figuring out how to get KMS working with my Radeon HD4870 (not a small process), I now have X working.

The problem is that the display suddenly switches to a text console (tty1) on it's own. I can't see any connection to what I'm doing making it switch. Two weird symptoms:

1. The tty1 console shows a login prompt AND a mouse pointer. When I move the mouse pointer it will switch cursors corresponding to the X session (text cursor over text, pointer over an icon, etc.). I can even click while it's showing the text console and the click will happen in the X session.

2. Similar to 1. When I type in the login prompt and hit enter it will ask for the password as expected. But the typing also happens in the X display.

It's like every mouse and keyboard action happens simultaneously in the X display and tty1. In order to switch back to the X display, I can use any of Ctrl-Alt-F2 to F7.

Probably related to this is that I cannot manually switch to a text console while in the X display.

Forgot to add that I'm getting numerous lines of this in the messages log:

Hi thanks for reporting this bug.

Anssi, dmorgan KMS issue related to the driver, or more one with the recent update ?

Some more info:

Running 'systemctl stop getty@tty1.service' stops the screen switches to tty1. (and keeps me sane)

When I shutdown the computer, the DM stops and the screen goes to a tty console with EVERYTHING I have typed on the keyboard. Then it finishes shutting down.

kdm.log file

I think this is related to KDM. I switched to logging in with GDM and I don't see the problem. I can switch to tty1-6 consoles and the DM session is started on tty7.

Comment 6 John Balcaen 2012-01-18 00:56:47 CET
i'm not sure that kdm is at fault here because kdm just notice that X server is probably crashing : Fatal X server IO error: Interrupted
system call/
Also something is strange here because X should be started on tty1 according to last change done by coling in plymouth/systemd.

Marking as duplicate of bug #4170 since coling is already answering on this bug.
