I tried a clean install using the pre-release alpha 1 iso burnt to a dvd (validated by k3b during burning). After selecting the partition, when it tries to format, it terminates without any error messages. On a retry, I switched to the console, and mkfs.ext4 worked, so it isn't a problem at that level, it's failing trying to call mkfs.ext4. If I unselect the option to format the already formatted partition, clicking on next terminates the installation.
Thanks for the bug report. Could you provide the file /root/drakx/report.bug.gz as an attachment ? If you don't have the file, you can switch to console 2 (by pressing 'Ctrl-Alt-F2') during installation, put a floppy in floppy drive or plug a USB key/stick and type: bug then press Enter. It will put report.bug on the floppy/key.

This must be specific to the ISO, as I just did a fresh install this afternoon formatting an ext4 root partition, and it worked fine.

Created attachment 1079 [details] report.bug just before trying to format sda4, which fails I burned a new regular dvd, just to rule out media problems with the rewritable dvd I was using. Same result. The sha1sum on the iso is ok.
Attachment 1079 mime type: application/octet-stream => text/plain
ok thanks. Assigned to the package maintainer.

On rebooting into a fully updated cauldron install, I've found https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1525#c74 is back, making my dvd drive inaccessible. This means this bug will only affect people using ide dvd drives that use the via chipset.
Summary: Clean install using pre-release alpha 1 fails in formatting or right after selecting partition. => module pata_acpi loads before pata_via making dvd inaccessibleSource RPM: drakx-installer-stage2 => kernel-3.1.0-2.mga2.src.rpm

Add tmb for that, but maybe separate that from this bug ?

Created attachment 1088 [details] report from bug command after the formatting error. This report.bug was generated right after getting the message An error occured ext4 formatting of sda4 failed This time I booted with the noacpi option, and confirmed that the pata_via module was loaded, and /dev/sr0 was available in stage2. I was too quick to assume the cauldron loading pata_acpi was also the cause of this problem. Changing the description back to the original reported. I'll open a separate bug report about pata_acpi on cauldron.
Attachment 1079 is obsolete: 0 => 1
Summary: module pata_acpi loads before pata_via making dvd inaccessible => Clean install using pre-release alpha 1 fails in formatting or right after selecting partition.
I should add the error message shows up almost instantly after clicking on the button to try and format the partition, so it is not running the mkfs.ext4 at all.
The problem is back with the latest cauldron installs. Despite having ... # cat /etc/modprobe.d/pata-via-first.conf install pata_acpi /sbin/modprobe pata_via; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install pata_acpi pata_acpi is being loaded before pata_via, so my hard drives are hda instead of sda, and the dvd drive is not sr0.
Argh. Sorry, Comment 9 was meant for bug report 3395.
Closing this bug report as I got past the formatting stage with beta 1.
