Sorry, the following package cannot be selected:dwarves-1.28-1.mga9.x86_64 (due to unsatisfied lib64dwarves1[== 1.28-1.mga9])

Probably still not completely propagated in mirrors. Here is:

https://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/distrib/9/x86_64/media/core/updates_testing/lib64dwarves1-1.28-1.mga9.x86_64.rpm

Just urpmi lib64dwarves1 works?
Comment 5 Herman Viaene 2024-12-11 15:27:23 CET
MGA9-64 Plasma Wayland on Compaq H000SB
Installation of kernel-server without dwarves, and rebooted. No obvious problems found.
lib64dwarves is missing from the provided file list above.
Tried to add it to QArepo, but
lib64dwarves-1.28-1.mga9.x86_64.rpm not found in the remote repository.
Will come back later.
Comment 6 Herman Viaene 2024-12-11 15:46:38 CET
Sorry, typo, lib64dwarves1-1.28-1.mga9.x86_64.rpm and dwarves install OK. System running seemingly well.
Comment 7 Giuseppe Ghibò 2024-12-11 16:04:51 CET
> Installation of kernel-server without dwarves, and rebooted. No obvious
> problems found.

exactly, dwarves is a devel package required only for kernel building, not stricly necessary for kernel running only.
Comment 8 Giuseppe Ghibò 2024-12-11 16:28:39 CET
Please pause 6.6.64 testing (and -linus companion too). There will be soon a 6.6.65 which was just out which fixes a bug causing 'boot failures of domU guests' (xen).

Comment 14 Giuseppe Ghibò 2024-12-12 09:39:49 CET
BTW, I see Yves changed the "Source:" field yesterday from: "kernel, kmod-xtables-addons, ..." to "kernel-6.6.61-1.mga9.src.rpm, kmod-xtables-addons, ...".

I guess 6.6.61 was an "experiment" to see whether it works correctly on madb.

What is not completely clear in this context is *how* the string there should be reported so that the rpmsforqa in madb returns the correct raw .txt file.

E.g. should be just the package name? full EVR followed by .src.rpm?

I expect that if it's provided just the package name there, the list contains all the files listed from the *latest* version of package in case there are more than a version. And return *exactly* the version requested if the full EVR is provided. Also the appending .src.rpm has some influence, or it's trimmed/ignored?

I updated the files list. Now the version to test is 6.6.65.

The lib64dwarves1 is still missing, unless dwarves is not really needed for this update.

with kernel 6.6.61 or last ?
on 6.6.61:

with 6.6.64 or 6.6.65 not possible because I can't login
but in MCC on start system module, I have this

Ok, TUF 15 seems having RTX 2050, so I guess you are using nvidia 550.135. What if you boot removing the string 'nokmsboot' before booting in grub?

I refrain from even testing too much on that machine, as it could get me into trouble: It is my wife's only computer ;-)
Additionnally I accidentally damaged the GPU fan when I changed battery in that laptop and used compressed air for cleaning dust...

no pb, tested even too much there.

Compressed air can is usually used for such kind of duties, though probably it had a tiny fan blades, and now require to change the whole fan unit.

On the other hand for her tasks HD graphics is probably enough.

FYI the history of 'nokmsboot' is a bit complicated. It was a custom mageia kernel patch that we had since much much time ago, that basically it's an alias for 'nomodeset' parameter. With nomodeset the DRM and fbdev drivers won't be loaded. As a side effect also no nouveau framebuffer is not loaded, and thus won't (at least shouldn't) trigger the automatic nouveau module loading at early boot stages, which then would cause conflicts when the nvidia kernel modules are loaded later.

What usually trigger a framebuffer module loading is the vga=<mode> parameter in boot cmdline. Furthermore things were become more complicated because beside system framebuffer, appeared simple drm framebuffer, and UEFI framebuffers.
You might also have seen that with plymouth (at least our) all this stuff has become pretty confusing at boot, and not smooth. This despite nvidia proprietary driver is used or not, but that's another problem that probably require a revision.

The 'nokmsboot' parameter is added to the boot command line by drakx11 when an nvidia proprietary driver is selected (this not always happens during various nvidia switches, but it was bug of drakx11).

Starting from initial kernel 6.2.1, that extra patch that was supporting 'nokmsboot' was dropped from our kernel. I don't know the exact reason, but I suppose mainly were two: 1) the code for modeset.c in kernel was reorganized upstream and moved elsewhere in tree and 2) starting from a certain nvidia-current version, the option for kernel modesetting, at least for the nvidia-current proprietary driver nvidia.modeset=1 has become mandatory).

As results of this, from kernel 6.2.1 to 6.6.1 the 'nokmsboot' option is ignored by kernel. You might have it or not, but nothing special would happen. Of course it has still effect on older kernels.

In kernel 6.6.65-1.mga9 I tried to re-introduce the support for 'nokmsboot', but as a side effect the nvidia-current driver was not working anymore, because that was conflicting with nvidia.modeset=1, even if you don't have explicitly in boot command line (it's in the internal's nvidia modules.conf file). That was the reason of releasing 6.6.65-2.mga9, where the nokmsboot alias was again removed as in the previous kernels.

What really should block the nouveau driver from being triggered to be loaded before the nvidia, when the proprietary nvidia driver is used (so to have it more robust), should be the option nouveau.modeset=0, and it is this parameter that drakx11 should add instead to boot cmdline, but that require a more bit complicated code to be added to drakx11, because nouveau.modeset=0 is not a "single" parameter like "nokmsboot", but it's a multiple parameter with option: "nouveau" module subparameter "modeset", option "=" , argument "0". But that's another task.

Note that on some older NV chip (IMHO those that were handled exclusively by the NVidia340), the nouveau 3D acceleration might not be particulary stable, and I noticed it got even worst with recent kernels and Xorg, and this causes black screen during boot, long slow downs (minutes, etc.) before starting the graphical desktop, crashes and other side effects (e.g. for hibernation, sleep, etc.).

In this case a workaround is to disable the 3D acceleration provided by nouveau (but rely only on 2D), appending the kernel boot parameter nouveau.noaccel (o nouveau.noaccel=1) and rely only on llvmpipe renderer for 3D. I noticed this is also affecting other distro (e.g. those out in october) that previous releases were booting correctly.

Same hardware as comment 50, different install using the broadcom-wl driver for wifi:

$ inxi -SN
System:
Host: localhost Kernel: 6.6.65-desktop-2.mga9 arch: x86_64 bits: 64
Desktop: KDE Plasma v: 5.27.10 Distro: Mageia 9
Network:
  Device-1: Intel 82577LC Gigabit Network driver: e1000e
  Device-2: Broadcom BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n driver: wl

No installation issues. The broadcom-wl driver appeared to build successfully.

However, after the reboot, Bug 33821 is still in effect. Network Manager does not initialize/start the wifi connection, but all I have to do is run the Network Center, and as soon as the gui appears, Network Manager automagically establishes the connection to my network. Once started, there are no issues with retaining or using the connection. It does this with every boot. The install from comment 50 uses the open source bcma driver, and doesn't show the issue.

One caveat: This hardware is nearly 25 years old, and I no longer consider it to be as reliable as I once did. That is why bug 33821 is labeled as "unconfirmed." That said, when something shows up every time I log in, it's usually not from a hardware issue.

In any case I do not believe this is a kernel issue, and should not block this update.

the broadcom driver is built from a 3rd party broadcom-wl package, external to kernel, which arrives from a pretty old driver tarball (it's 2015) that wasn't officially updated anymore. Our package includes patches from here and there to build under newer kernel, but our packages stopped on december 2022. There is also a git source which collects further patches here https://github.com/antoineco/broadcom-wl/, from which the latest commit here https://github.com/antoineco/broadcom-wl/commit/f87141bb137db22fe17fc2fe42bfb39187220fc8 says "it's no longer maintained" and suiggests to seek for other alternative sources from either one of these:

- Arch: https://gitlab.archlinux.org/archlinux/packaging/packages/broadcom-wl-dkms
- Debian: https://salsa.debian.org/broadcom-sta-team/broadcom-sta
- Fusion: https://pkgs.rpmfusion.org/cgit/nonfree/wl-kmod.git/

And maybe there are also other new tree in github.

What is not completely clear here is whether your card can work with either bcma.ko, and wl.ko? If so why not use just bcma.ko? Which tool decided to use broadcom-wl instead? So wl.ko module is (or was) an alternative to bcma.ko supposed to work better?

In the end maybe our broadcom-wl 3rd party package driver just need a revision incorporating the extra fixes available in the link above (so should have its own bug).

And last but not least what are the device pci-id of your broadcom card (e.g. from lspcidrake -v)?

Yes, I remember our last change to the wl driver. It did not build for me while testing the 6.1 series kernel. I reported that to TMB, he worked on it, and it started building and working again.

This answer is more involved. This laptop originally came with an Intel wifi card. It went bad, and I replaced it with the broadcom card that I salvaged from another 6550b. It has always worked with both bcma and wl drivers, but there are issues related to each.

Our Network Center has a bug with the bcma driver. When left on its own, it selects a "driver" that doesn't work. The user has to select the correct driver manually. See bug 31473 for a more detailed explanation, including screen shots. Network Manager hasn't displayed this issue - yet. And, our Network Center doesn't show the issue when the wl driver is installed.

I think that might be something to think about. Bug 33821 might serve for that.

I have noticed sometimes SDDM get blurred, and sometimes window flicker after resuming until you minimise and restore application window.
But it is seldom, and I am getting used to it...

Tank you again for proactive notes and comments.
Maybe some should get wikified.

Yes, exactly. As reminder I think we can move the infos here to that bug, to see if we can overhaul the broadcom-wl package adding the missed available patches (that would be also good for next kernel 6.12.x).

No installation issues. I've only used it for about 10 minutes, but it looks good and stable so far.

From Comment 51:

"One caveat: This hardware is nearly 25 years old, and I no longer consider it to be as reliable as I once did. That is why bug 33821 is labeled as "unconfirmed." That said, when something shows up every time I log in, it's usually not from a hardware issue."

The HP 6550b is more reliable than my math skills. It is nearly 15 years old, NOT 25. Sigh.

Same hardware as comment 45, different install, using the nvidia-newfeature driver under test in bug 33847:

No installation issues. A brief test after the reboot shows no obvious regressions. Using it to write this comment.
