Description Morgan Leijström 2024-07-15 14:38:06 CEST
Description of problem:
On Windows7 guest some USB hardware do not work and guest system hangs when removing it. I guess this is not limited to only the device type i happen to have.

Version: VirtualBox 7.0.18 from Bug 33273
In that bug you also see tests i performed, and inxi of host.

How reproducible: Always.
Tested with kernels linus & desktop 6.6.28 & 6.6.37
While I see no problem with USB flash stick.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Plug in Galep-5 (a chip programmer from conitec.com)
2. Start guest windows 7 in VirtualBox 7.0.18
3. In guest machine menu USB devices, checkmark Conitec (someting)
4. Start the related Conitec software, see it fail to connect.
   Note it do take minutes to boot normally
   from plugging in before it can respond.
   But now it fail desite waiting and retrying.
5. remove checkmark for the device (from 3 above)
 -> Guest becone frozen, do not even respond to ACPI off from VirtualBox.

Workaround: downgrade to VirtualBox 7.0.14
Guest additions can be kept a 7.0.18 for this)

I see nothing in host system journal.
I guess problem is upstream.
I have no time to dig for now, but may test a new version easily.

Another user have reported a very similar behaviour with another USB hardware, other Linux hosts, other MSWindows version, and the problem appear on VirtualBox > 7.0.14

Comment 2 Morgan Leijström 2024-07-19 01:15:21 CEST
Today some test progress at upstream bug: the regression affects OHCI/EHCI only

I will test on 7.0.20 when we have it, Bug 33408

Depends on: (none) => 33408

Comment 3 Morgan Leijström 2024-07-23 18:42:39 CEST
Still valid with 7.0.20, confirming the other reporter upstream.

Depends on: 33408 => (none)

In your installation is the extension pack installed?

> In your installation is the extension pack installed?

No. And it should not be needed since VirtualBox 7+.
And 7.0.14 works OK without.
Comment 6 Morgan Leijström 2024-07-31 08:56:47 CEST
WORKAROUND as noted in the upstream bug is to in VirtualBox guest setting select USB3 (xHCI driver)- it works even if the hardware port is USB2.

For Widows 7 guest an archived driver need be installed for USB3, see bug.

I do no think this problem is common enough to deserve an entry our errata, and it can be found by searching both our (here) and upstream bugs.
