Smooth installation and reboot to Mate desktop. nvidia driver built during boot. Kernel: 5.10.35-desktop-1.mga8 x86_64 10-Core Intel Core i9-7900X [MT MCP] NVIDIA GP102 [GeForce GTX 1080 Ti] driver: nvidia v: 460.80 Looked at nvidia-settings. teapot, glxspheres and glmark2 all returned high frame rates. Image displays and videos work with ristretto, eom, vlc. Blender and GIMP OK, Virtualbox, Stellarium and Celestia as well.

Mageia 8-64 OK __Old problem about updating nvidia while running plasma screensaver Started update of nvidia packages, went for lunch. Back, screensaver had kicked in. After touching the mouse and waited some seconds I was greeted with the full-screen large white text on black message to switch using Ctrl-Alt-F2, issue "loginctl unlock-session c2", and then Ctrl-Alt-F1. Known problem, we have been here before. Problem is that logging in and entering the command is a bit alien for inexperienced users especially as every 5 seconds there scroll this text: (timestamp) NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 460.80, but (timestamp) NVRM: this kernel module has the version 460.73.01. Please (timestamp) NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver (timestamp) NVRM: components have the same version. Also, as usual, the Plasma launch menu items shutdown, reboot, logout all do nothing (in journal i.e: ksmserver-logout-greeter[1641113]: Failed to create OpenGL context for ... etc ) --- Hardware: My workstation "svarten": Mainboard: Sabertooth P67, CPU: i7-3770, RAM 16G, GM107 [GeForce GTX 750] using nvidia-current; GeForce 635 series and later, 4k display. dkms status tells me nvidia-current is OK. BOINC detects CUDA and OpenCL. VirtualBox quick check OK: graphics, video playing Plasma desktop, using Thunderbird, LibreOffice, Ktorrent, Nextcloud client, flatpak Firefox... Video with sound in Firefox

Installation and configuration went smoothly. initrd rebuilt. Quick reboot. Kernel: 5.10.27-desktop-1.mga7 x86_64 Quad Core: Intel Core i7-4790 NVIDIA GM204 [GeForce GTX 970] driver: nvidia v: 460.80 nvidia-settings; changed OpenGL Sync to VBlank to on. teapot ran at 30 fps - the same for glxspheres. glmark2 returned 18336. Switched off Sync to VBlank and teapot ran at 1500+ fps. Ran celestia, stellarium, darktable, blender. Sound and vision OK for videos in vlc. Other desktop applications working as expected.
Teapot and glxgears hit in sync exactly 60 fps on my 4k screen. @Len do your screen really only refresh at 30fps?
@Morgan. Apparently so. Mine is 4K also. In most other cases it has been 60 Hz as far back as I can remember. On this workstation with a 3K screen teapot runs at 60 fps when Vsynced. On another machine with a 3K screen and no nvidia graphics the refresh rate is 60 Hz. Tried glxgears on the machine with the 4K screen and that shows 30 fps also. No issues with that apart from shearing for videos at fullscreen.
Important remarks: For 3K and 4K displays, remember that HDPM connector can limit the framerate to 60Hz and V-Sync will automatically switch to 60 fps. Sometimes, best results can be obtain with a DisplayPort connection or even some Dual DVI link... @Morgan, for updating nvidia drivers while in Plasma session, this is normal to have kernel logging error about: > (timestamp) NVRM: API mismatch: the client has the version 460.80, but > (timestamp) NVRM: this kernel module has the version 460.73.01. Please > (timestamp) NVRM: make sure that this kernel module and all NVIDIA driver > (timestamp) NVRM: components have the same version. User should reboot ASAP, and now, ksmserver-logout-greeter is able to display logoff/reboot/shutdown screen by running software render backend. But, we should also add nvidia packages to the advertised packages that require a reboot, like glibc, systemd and kernel. Hi, For me the driver nvidia 460.80, don't work with new GPU. With some people we have tested some GPU. And all the new crashed with new gpu but it's ok with old. GTX 1650, 1660 RTX 2060, 2070 & 3080 I haven't tested with others, they all crashed with this new driver. FYI, Pop os returned to the driver 460.73, indead System 76 sell rtx laptop and they cannot have a distro wich don't work with their laptops. I proposed to return on the 460.73, in waiting new nvidia update...
