Description Philippe Didier 2021-03-30 23:53:33 CEST
NB The same problem appears in other distributions too
The project seems to be dead upstream

Launching from console :
we get this

(ogmrip:31488): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: 23:03:27.705: g_param_spec_internal: assertion 'g_param_spec_is_valid_name (name)' failed

** (ogmrip:31488): CRITICAL **: 23:03:27.705: ogmrip_settings_install_key: assertion 'G_IS_PARAM_SPEC (pspec)' failed

repeated hundred times

and then

Perhaps needs to be obsoleted at least in cauldron

Thank you for this report. "The same problem appears in other distributions too" is damning. Looks good for dropping, as you say.

Last Update: 2019-12-31 (Sourceforge). Version/release information is lacking on the site: http://ogmrip.sourceforge.net/en/index.html

Assigning to DavidG whose SRPM this is.
CC'ing Morgan in case another ERRATA if it cannot be fixed.

Nothing new here nor upstream.

Now entered into Errata:

CC'ing all packagers collectively, because the maintainer is likely still unavailable.

Not adding it to the tracker about packages to be deleted, because of the possible fix.

So ok, you can test now ogmrip-1.0.1-10.1.mga8 in Core/Updates_testing and in Tainted/Updates_testing repos!

I leave it you to make an advisory.

MGA8-64 MATE on Acer Aspire 5253
No installation issues
Installed ogmrip-1.0.1-10.1.mga8 with QARepo, so I suppose this is the Core/Updates version, the tainted version shoudl have a different name.
I used a DVD I made myself, and checked it plays OK in vlc-player.
Anyway, the main window appears OK, I can check the Preferences and e.g. change the destination folder. But no matter what, as soon as I click the "Load" button, the selection box comes up very briefly and then the program crashes.

Comment 14 Herman Viaene 2023-02-02 17:12:44 CET
Noticed that there is also a lib64ogmrip1 involved in this update. I didn't see that in my first test. So installed this one as well from the tainted repos.
Using the tainted version, the extraction proceeded in different steps (long time on a slow laptop. The last one I saw was "Compression testing" and then it wanted to do something with the sound, and that failed with some "Unknown file type. There is a log and its last lines read:

The latest release is from the year 2015
https://sourceforge.net/projects/ogmrip/files/ogmrip/1.0/1.0.1/

Unfortunately sourceforge count's a filed bug as "project activity". Thats where the date 2019 is coming from which Lewis found in comment 1.

The original developer billl (Olivier Rolland) statet several times in the project discussions, that this project is dead.

15 open bugs (oldest from 2010 and youngest from 2019).

So there will be no upstream support to fix this dead package.

If Mageia want's to keep this package, Mageia (the packager who feels responsible for this dead package) needs to fix it alone.

Good luck!
Comment 16 Herman Viaene 2023-02-06 10:26:09 CET
Tried again with a commercial DVD, extracting just one chapter, same dead end at "Compression testing".
Noticed however now there is a feedback straight at the beginning on the CLI:

Googled on the FAAC, and found it mentioned on different places in 2011 - 2013 without solution at the time.
Anyway, did the test all over agian with my own DVD, but omitted the Compression option, and the program preoceeds backing up, extracting audio etc... but giving feedback

But that file /mnt/video2/video.RGHXZ1 isn't simply there (anymore???)
This seems rather hopeless to me.
Comment 17 Thomas Andrews 2023-02-10 03:10:45 CET
I tried the tainted version in Cauldron on my HP Pavilion 15, with a similar, if somewhat different, lack of success.

I have removed the optical drive from this laptop, replacing it with a second hard drive, so I used a usb optical drive that was plugged into the two usb 3.0 ports. When run from the Plasma menu or with a simple "ogmrip" from the command line, it was unable to automatically detect the drive. I had to use "ogmrip /dev/sr0" to get it to see it.

I made the mistake of trying to work with a 3 hour movie, leaving the "copy DVD to the hard drive" box checked on my first try. I had no idea that would fill up the 211GB that were available on that partition and crash. (I would have expected it to take longer than it did to do that, too.) On the second try I told it to extract just the first chapter, but it still started to copy the whole DVD before I canceled it.

I told it to skip the copy on the third try, and it proceeded, getting as far as doing something with the audio, and there it seemed to stall out, but not crash. (I say "seemed" because as I write this it occurs to me that it *might* have been processing the video without letting me know something was happening, and I got too impatient. But I don't really think so.)

While it was not crashing, I took a look at the log, where I saw what looked like about 250 messages about a "bad stream" that should be reported as a bug, followed eventually by a shorter bunch of messages about a different error, I don't remember what now. That log had stopped growing, indicating a stall to me, but I suppose I could be wrong there.

When I finally hit the "cancel" button and closed the app, the log disappeared.

I'm with Herman. It all seems rather hopeless, especially in light of the information in Comment 15.

So what do we do about Mageia 8? The patch does what it was supposed to do - allow ogmrip to launch. But it doesn't work, so there's really no point in pushing it.

Do we mark it as a "Won't Fix" or something else?
Comment 22 Morgan Leijström 2023-02-16 01:04:47 CET
I think so
