Description Sébastien Morin 2021-03-02 13:51:08 CET
Description of problem:

Installing Mageia 8 with Enlightenment will still use Mga7 wallpaper.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Mageia 8 from the classic installer ISO
2. When you reach DESKTOP SELECTION, choose CUSTOM, then untick Plasma and tick Other Desktop environments.
3. Finish your install and reboot. This will install IceWM only. When entering IceWM, configure your media, then install task-enlightenment.
4. Rebooting will automatically take you to Enlightenment.
See that the wallpaper is still the Mga7 wallpaper.

Correct.

The official provider of Mageia theme for enlightenment "Roy", does not like the new Mageia 8 wallpaper and decided to keep the Mageia 7 one.

We used to have the default theme for enlightenment, so if that is not acceptable for you, there is still the option to use the enlightenment's one, or just change the wallpaper and save it under a new theme.

It is not a bug, it is a feature :)

Well, as you could see if you had a little look at the wiki page linked to the screenshot, almost all other DEs have updated their wallpaper to the one we now consider “the Mageia 8 signature wallpaper”.

I think this is a matter of visual coherence –– even, our “trademark”. It is also a matter a respect for those who created the artwork, for those who voted, for those who organized the vote. At this point, it is no longer a matter of personal taste.

It is indeed a very good suggestion and I am pretty sure the maintainer of Enlightenment will be able to change the signature wallpaper to another one which is more pleasant to him, on his own personal computer.

I am the guilty party. My distaste for the brightness of the M8 wallpaper (as well as being a bit overloaded lately) resulted in a rethink of the process as there are two elements involved: icons and wallpaper.

Rather than pointing to a default wallpaper as happens with other DEs, both it and the icons are changed in in the e-theme, which is what I have maintained. This is not difficult, but involves decompiling E's default theme and changing the wallpaper and embedded icons. Chris, as package maintainer, then has to repackage the modified theme with efl. Now the frequency of changes to the theme depend on changes to two things that do not happen at the same time: the default E theme and the wallpaper. While these changes do not occur that often, eliminating the wallpaper from the mix means the theme does not have to be redone nor an unchanged efl repackaged by Chris just because there is a new wallpaper.

The way to do this is simply to change the icons and use the charcoal grey E default with Mageia icons. Then the wallpapers can be selected separately. If you know a way to automate that, fine, otherwise the user can always point to the current Mageia wallpaper manually -- and one solution might be to simply do a writeup in the Mageia wiki and mention how to do this in the release notes.

For example you should find the current wallpaper on your system in /usr/share/mga/backgrounds/ in various resolutions. In E do

Main Menu > Config > Wallpaper

then choose photo/image (again I am looking at the Spanish) on the window that appears and navigate to the directory above and you can pull in the current wallpaper for E.

You can also go to https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Wallpaper to download any and all default Mageia wallpapers. (The four work spaces on my Cauldron machine use four different Mageia wallpapers.)

I am acutely aware that this alternative does not address your problem of visual "dissonance". However, despite being driven to rethink for less than the best of reasons, I think a simpler solution would be better and I, for one, would welcome any suggestion or help in making this easier for users.

As a side note, when I started with Mageia (3) it was stepping up to KDE4 I have also used Mate (solid and has developed nicely since the 1.2 version I first used), XFCE (very solid and present on some machines I help people with) at various points in time. All are good DEs, but I simply cannot imagine any of them as my daily driver, not because they are not good, but because they have things I don't need or care about or tools other than those of my choosing or they don't allow me to work exactly as I have come to with E. At the same time I am not a programmer and even find packaging a bit beyond my skill level, so depend on good up-to-date packaging (sometimes rare with E) and like the idea of not putting too great a load on Chris because he deserves more thanks than it is possible to muster. Before he took on packaging E, it was typically outdated in Mageia.

Default E theme with Mageia icons

The conky is mine, just too lazy to kill it before the screen capture.

You opened this bug from personal taste. You know we work for free right? I am packaging enlightenment, that I do not use, for free. Appreciate it. Enlightenment comes with a default theme, which is not Mageia.
So, everything else is the free will of people, here Roy's. Please respect it, as I do.

> You opened this bug from personal taste.

Well, no: I opened this bug report because I consider the Mageia 8 signature wallpaper (also created by people who work for free) should be displayed by default, whatever the DE chosen by a user.

I can see now that you consider it is normal behaviour that this DE still uses the wallpaper from the previous release. Duely noted.

>I can see now that you consider it is normal behaviour that this DE still uses >the wallpaper from the previous release. Duely noted.

I consider normal behaviour to accept that someone has no time to update a default theme, simply because it does not compromise, even by epsilon, the functioning of the whole system.
Although it is no so trivial to update a default theme (please have a look to the spec file), it is very trivial to pick up your favourite wallpaper.

Hence this bug is a wontfix, unless someone works on providing a default Mageia 8, E-Mageia-GPLv3.edj file.

Cheers.
