Description David Walser 2020-07-15 21:52:43 CEST
https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises/nrpe

Notice: As of NRPE version 4.0.1, this project is deprecated. It will not receive any more bugfixes or features, except to resolve security issues.

We should drop it at some point, ideally before Mageia 8.
Comment 1 David Walser 2020-07-15 21:53:36 CEST
Apparently it's being replaced by:
https://github.com/NagiosEnterprises/ncpa
Comment 2 Guillaume Rousse 2020-07-16 20:05:06 CEST
ncpa is yet another PITA to build, shipping with modified dependencies, and isn't compatible with python 3.

As long as we don't have a suitable replacement for nrpe, I don't see the point of removing it from the distribution.

I can't find any official deprecation advisory in upstream documentation, and latest version is no older than july. I don't see any reason to rush here.

You can find the deprecation notice prominently on the page which David linked. The quote is from the readme.

If they're only supposed to be fixing security issues, Mageia 8 needs to be updated to 4.1.0. It would be nice if they would say for how long they intend to keep fixing security issues.

Added in task-obsolete

Comment 8 Guillaume Rousse 2023-06-20 09:31:07 CEST
As there is still no credible replacement for it, forcing removal from where it is already installed seems an overzealous decision. And I still see no attempt to ask current maintainer ("dlucio", according to maintainer DB) opinion on the subject.
Comment 9 David Walser 2023-06-20 12:55:52 CEST
dlucio has been inactive for years, but yes, I would have preferred to see this replaced by ncpa, rather than task-obsolete.
Comment 10 David GEIGER 2023-06-21 06:14:14 CEST
This bug was opened about 3 years and nobody did not take care or make anything for this, so I don't see any problem to drop this package!
And yes the real maintainer is really inactive for years.

I did take care enough to have a look at the suggested replacement, which wasn't suitable, and which still isn't. Just because no solution was found sofar doesn't mean nobody acted.

And while the removal of the software from the distribution may be acceptable, forcing its removal from someone else system is not. Once again, this kind of decision belongs to system administrators, not to overzealous distribution contributers.

I agree with Guillaume

IMO drop it but let it be kept installed if upgrading

What do you think Lewis?

I agree, not everything that's dropped needs to be or should be kept in task-obsolete. Now that the package has been dropped, we can remove it from task-obsolete.
Comment 14 David Walser 2023-06-23 02:31:02 CEST
nrpe removed from task-obsolete (by David Geiger). Thanks.

This looks sensible.
