Description Béat E 2020-03-31 20:38:11 CEST
Description of problem: I made a fresh install of Mageia 7.1 on my new notebook Asus VivoBook 15 X512FA and updated the whole system. There is a problem with the display when I am using Plasma. The desktop is black although there should be some program icons and a wallpaper. When I click with the cursor at the right spot on the desktop I can launch the program although there is no icon visible. There is more curious behavior. When I launch systemsettings5, everything in the window that opens is frozen and I can't scroll or click on an item. The task manager at the bottom is empty. Also on the bar at the bottom the net applet, keyboard layout and bluetooth are hidden and appear only when I go there with the cursor while the icons for the battery, the sound level and the clipboard are always visible.

This problem might be related to my graphic card Intel UHD Graphics.

There is a strange thing. When I open a second session with another user and come back to my previous session things are fine. This means I can see the wallpaper and the icons on my desktop, systemsettings5 works and the open windows are shown in the bar at the bottom.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. After boot open a Plasma session.
2. When the session is open the following behavior is visible: the desktop (wallpaper and program icons) is hidden behind a layer of black. When lauching systemsettings5, everything within its window is frozen. The bar at the bottom isn't shown properly
3. If I open a session for a second user and come back to the old session the problems are gone.

Very likely. Can you please do:
 $ lspci -v
and post *just* the graphics section (often called "VGA compatible controller").
This will show what your graphics hardware is, and what driver is in use for it.
Please also attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log compressed with xz:
 $ xz /var/log/Xorg.0.log
which should give /var/log/Xorg.0.log.xz

Can you remember whether the problem was apparent on re-booting for the first time after installation; or only after updating the system?
If you happen to have a different desktop available than Plasma, you could test whether the problem arises with that too; to test whether it is just Plasma related, or wider.

Here is the output of lspci:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation UHD Graphics (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
        DeviceName: VGA
        Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Device 1cd1
        Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 132
        Memory at b0000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
        Memory at a0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
        I/O ports at 3000 [size=64]
        [virtual] Expansion ROM at 000c0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
        Capabilities: <access denied>
        Kernel driver in use: i915
        Kernel modules: i915

The problem started right after the installation and didn't change after updating the system. I will try another desktop now and give you further feedback.

Screenshot of start menu

I tried the Xfce and the LXDE desktop and didn't run into problems.

Loging out and in itself doesn't help. I really need to change the user and come back in order to have a stable desktop. But even then it isn't perfect. For example the start menu has fine horizontal lines. (see screenshot in the attachment)

There is another problem I could mention. After I have chosen to change the user the desktop goes black and stays this way. I need to push Ctrl+Alt+F1 in order to see the login screen.

Thank you for the extra information, and your further tests. A screenshot is worth many words.

So assigning this to KDE/Plasma group, CC Drivers.

There is something more I noticed. When I want to watch a movie with VLC I can hear the sound, but the window remains black. SMPlayer shows the film most of the time, but it goes black when I switch between full screen and normal windows. This happens not only in Plasma, but in other desktops too.

Re the previous comment, see bug 26524.

This problem is gone and I don't know why exactly. It could have been the X11 update recently which solved another problem on this notebook or any other update since 2020-03-31. You can close this bug
