Comment 3 Morgan Leijström 2018-10-15 20:37:21 CEST
Testing kernel-desktop-4.14.76-1.mga6-1-1.mga6.x86_64.rpm
All systems 64 bit, all updated to everything in updates_testing.

** Resuming problems on all three of three laptops i tried **

Thinkpad T61, with Nvidia GPU proprietary driver, LVM on SSD.
=> FAIL resuming from suspend: optical drive blinks a short while but nothing else seem to happen - even the moon icon "sleeping" keep being lit all the time.

Laptop Thinkpad T60, CPU core2Duo T5600, ati RV515/M54 X1400, wifi AR5418, LVM on LUKS on SSD.
=> FAIL resuming from suspend like the T61.

Laptop Acer Aspire 7 A717-71G:
Intel i5, Nvidia and Intel GPU:s but only intel is configured, as per default in Mageia installer. Disk: nVME SSD, EFI boot, separate /boot, then rest of system in LVM lv:s in a LUKS encrypted pv.
=> FAIL resuming from suspend like the ones above, here also the keyboard lights up.

Other things like wifi, video, sound seem OK.

Hibernation not tested.

All system still resumes OK if rebooted on 4.14.70 desktop kernel.

Workstation, same kernel, all updated like above: i7-2600K, Nvidia GTX760 (GK104) using proprietary driver GeForce 420 and later, with CUDA & OpenCL detected OK in BOINC, LVM on LUKS on SSD, VirtualBox running MSW7 incl USB, Plasma5.12 etc, video in Firefox,,,
All i tested on this machine is OK.

Comment 4 Thomas Andrews 2018-10-15 20:38:07 CEST
On real 32-bit hardware, Dell Inspiron 5100, P4, 2GB RAM, radeon 7500 graphics using VESA driver, old Atheros wifi. Running Plasma, using the desktop kernel.

All packages installed cleanly. Reboot was uneventful, and afterward tried Firefox and vlc 3.0.0.4. No regressions noted.

Looks OK on this hardware.
Comment 5 Morgan Leijström 2018-10-15 20:50:44 CEST
Regarding suspend/resuming, the last line in journal:
(output of journalctl -b-1 as root on the next boot)

  date&timehere systemname systemd-sleep[5296]: Suspending system...
Comment 6 Morgan Leijström 2018-10-15 23:00:37 CEST
Testing on same Thinkpad T60 as in Comment 3,

** resuming WORKS on kernel-linus-4.14.76-1 **

While it fail also on
  kernel-server-4.14.76-1,
  kernel-tmb-desktop-4.14.76-1
and from backport/backport_testing:
  kernel-desktop 4.18.12-1 and 4.18.14-2
  kernel-server 4.18.12-1 and 4.18.14-2

Have anyone had success with resuming from suspend?

My Thinkpad T400 have the same resume issue on latest Cauldron kernel, and also there it works to use latest Linus kernel instead. Bug 23686 c 2
Comment 11 Thomas Andrews 2018-10-17 03:46:24 CEST
On real hardware, Athlon X2 7750, 8GB RAM, nvidia 9800GT graphics (nvidia340), Atheros wifi.

Two Plasma systems on this hardware, one each 64-bit and 32-bit, both using the server kernel. The 64-bit system has VirtualBox installed.

On both systems, packages installed cleanly, and rebooting proceeded normally, with the nvidia340 driver module built without incident.

After reboot, I tried several apps on each system, including VirtualBox, with no regressions noted.

Suspend/resume does not work on my HP Probook 6550b, either. With previous suspend/resume problems, a reboot would happen upon trying to resume. This time, all of the keyboard LEDs light up, but the screen remains black.

On a normal resume, the wifi LED briefly shows as amber, then switches to blue when the connection is re-established. This time, the wifi LED stays amber.

As with Morgan's experience, returning to kernel 4.14.70 restores proper suspend/resume function.

I will be removing this kernel from my laptop, as I have developed a need for suspend/resume to function.

Same experience on an Asus K75V (i5-3210M, not making use of the NVidia graphics, just using the i915 driver; xfce session): after upgrading to kernel 4.18.12 (kernel-desktop-4.18.12-1.mga6-1-1.mga6) any suspend (to memory, to be precise) requires a hard reboot to get going again.
I returned to kernel 4.14.70 (kernel-desktop-4.14.70-2.mga6-1-1.mga6) for the time being. I don't have any intermediate or alternate versions installed.

On the aged hardware from Comment 4, suspend does not seem to work with either kernel. At first I suspected a lid switch problem, but after checking the functions of the power switch, I find that it's being ignored. Also, the laptop has gone back to not shutting down completely.

With all the problems that I have found with this hardware, rescued from a church sale with a bad battery, hard drive, and optical drive, yet another hardware problem is certainly not out of the question. So, I must rescind my OK on this hardware, because it isn't reliable for testing purposes.

an issue with 4.18 series from cauldron shows up in 4.14 too :/

I was using it with 4.14.70-2 when I wrote that. I had tried closing the lid, with no effect showing when I opened it again, and the power button, set to bring up the logout dialog, was ignored. And, when I went to shut down, it went to a black screen but the fan was still running and the power LED was still on.

I then tried a boor without "splash quiet," then shut down again to see if there would be a clue about where it was hanging up. And, of course, perversely, it shut down the way it should.

Hello, I have the same "freeze on resume" problem on two laptops running Mageia 6, as reported by other users. My laptops are:
- HP Envy 17 (Intel core i7 4710MQ)
- Acer Aspire Revo V5 171 (Intel core i3 3227U)

The last official working kernel was:
 kernel-desktop-4.14.70-2.mga6-1-1.mga6 (updates)

All newer 'desktop' kernel are affected by "freeze on resume":
 kernel-desktop-4.14.76-1.mga6-1-1.mga6 (updates_testing)
 kernel-desktop-4.18.12-1.mga6-1-1.mga6 (backports)
 kernel-desktop-4.18.16-1.mga6-1-1.mga6 (backports_testing)

Finally, the 'kernel-linus' variants work perfectly, no issue at all.
We should probably compare 'kernel-linus-4.14.76' and 'kernel-desktop-4.14.76' (probably a patch is the culprit).

Comment 21 Thomas Andrews 2018-10-21 19:41:13 CEST
On the same Probook 6550b as in Comment 12, except with a 32-bit Plasma install and using the server kernel, suspend/resume also fails with 4.14.76-1. But in this case, resume forces a restart.

In some previous 4.14.x kernels, suspend/resume only had a problem with 32-bit installs, and then not with the server kernel, and as I recall either tmb or linus worked with 32-bit, too.

Has anybody checked suspend/resume with the 64-bit server kernel?
Comment 22 Thomas Backlund 2018-10-21 19:46:34 CEST
No need to check,
The fix for virtualbox hanging for some users on early microcode load is causing the suspend/resume hang as it is apparently not safe to call out to dmi during suspend/resume...

So new kernels will be coming with that fix disabled, and other security and bug fixes added

Comment 23 François Andriot 2018-10-21 19:49:16 CEST
(just a few second too late, Thomas posted before me)

Hello, I've built several revisions of the kernel package today to narrow the problem.
http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/updates/6/kernel/

The last working SVN revision is r1314252, and the next one r1314294 is freezing on resume.

The comment on r1314294 says 'dont try to load cpu microcode on virtualbox (mga#21553)'
And the diff shows that a single patch was added: x86-kernel-cpu-disable-microcode-loader-under-virtualbox.patch

So, I've fetched the latest SVN revision 1323390, manually disabled this patch, and rebuilt the packages.
And it now works: I have a kernel-desktop-4.14.76-1 that do NOT freeze on resume.
Comment 24 Thomas Backlund 2018-10-22 06:36:00 CEST

Quick tests on a few of the kernel flavours on mga6 and Cauldron, concentrating on verifying resuming is fixed, other than that only very simple usage yet on the laptops, will update here if i see any regression.
All systems are updated against updates_testing.

Test OK 64 bit resume from suspend on three of three laptops:

__Thinkpad T60, ATI GPU
OK: kernel-desktop-4.14.78-1.mga6
OK: kernel-desktop-4.18.16-2.mga6 (backports_testing)

Strange quirk using kernel-tmb-desktop-4.14.78-1.mga6: on first attempt it did not wake up on pressing Fn I only saw a status led twinkle a fraction of a second, but a short press on power button waked it up Ok. Subsequent tests OK.

Strange quirk using kernel-server-4.14.78-1.mga6: pressing Fn it wakes up so i can see a flash of the Plasma desktop and then immediately suspends again. Pressing a second time it wakes up OK to the unlock screen. Repeatable: Happens after every suspend. I can also use power button to wake it up, works the same. Maybe it is something about timing, like it wakes up back in the process of shutting down - in that brief awakening i see the plasma desktop instead of lock screen, but in next wake up there is the lock screen.

I have noted that earlier at least some systems resumes with visible desktop a fraction of a second before the lock screen replaces it. Preferably of course desktop should not be visible upon resume before user enter password.

__Thinkpad T400, intel GPU
OK: kernel-desktop-4.18.16-desktop-2.mga7 (Cauldron)

__Thinkpad T61, Nvidia proprietary
OK: kernel-desktop-4.14.78-1.mga6

--------------------------

Test OK kernel-desktop-4.14.78-1.mga6 on Workstation: i7-2600K, Nvidia GTX760 (GK104) using proprietary driver GeForce 420 and later, with CUDA & OpenCL detected OK in BOINC, LVM on LUKS on SSD, Plasma5.12 etc, video in Firefox,,, VirtualBox running MSW7 incl USB and networking. All i tested on this machine is OK.

For as yet unknown reasons, resume no longer works on this hardware, regardless of which kernel is used. I have tried several things, including all available 64-bit 4.14.78 kernels, and older 4.14.70-2 kernels. I even went so far as to do a re-install from the 6.1 Plasma iso, to no avail. The symptom also exists on the 4.14.56 kernel. I tried creating a new user, to get away from any local settings that my usual user might have, and he has the problem, too.

The older kernels worked with suspend/resume before. I have no idea why they don't now. There are no other visible symptoms of malfunction.

Hibernate works as designed. Hybrid Suspend appears to suspend as it should, but awakens as from hibernation, not suspension.

The 4.14.78-1 kernel works the same as the others. As no one else has reported these symptoms, I must assume it is unique to my hardware. Since everything else is working, and the fault persists across multiple kernels, I doubt that the fault lies within this particular kernel. I see no reason to hold it back because of what I am now seeing.

Actually, I almost like hibernate better than suspend, anyway. Easier on the battery.

Tested i586 desktop kernel with the Dell Inspiron 5100 from Comment 4.

Packages installed smoothly, reboot was normal. All apps seem to be working properly.

This hardware does not respond to closing the lid at all, as mentioned in Comment 14. In addition, it often does not shut down all the way to off. I finally got it to hang up during shutdown after a boot without the "splash quiet" kernel options. This revealed the hangup to be right at the point where it tried to enter the S5 state. I believe this means there is a problem with APCI, not necessarily with the kernel, and I believe it is unique to this machine.

I do not believe the kernel should be held back because of it.

description: |
This kernel update is based on the upstream 4.14.78 and fixes atleast the
  following security issues:

An issue was discovered in the fd_locked_ioctl function in
drivers/block/floppy.c in the Linux kernel through 4.15.7. The floppy
driver will copy a kernel pointer to user memory in response to the
FDGETPRM ioctl. An attacker can send the FDGETPRM ioctl and use the
obtained kernel pointer to discover the location of kernel code and data
and bypass kernel security protections such as KASLR (CVE-2018-7755).

A security flaw was found in the chap_server_compute_md5() function in the
ISCSI target code in the Linux kernel in a way an authentication request
from an ISCSI initiator is processed. An unauthenticated remote attacker
can cause a stack buffer overflow and smash up to 17 bytes of the stack.
The attack requires the iSCSI target to be enabled on the victim host.
Depending on how the target's code was built (i.e. depending on a compiler,
compile flags and hardware architecture) an attack may lead to a system
crash and thus to a denial-of-service or possibly to a non-authorized
access to data exported by an iSCSI target. Due to the nature of the flaw,
privilege escalation cannot be fully ruled out, although we believe it is
  highly unlikely (CVE-2018-14633).

An issue was discovered in xenvif_set_hash_mapping in
drivers/net/xen-netback/hash.c in the Linux kernel through 4.18.1, as used
in Xen through 4.11.x and other products. The Linux netback driver allows
frontends to control mapping of requests to request queues. When processing
a request to set or change this mapping, some input validation (e.g., for
an integer overflow) was missing or flawed, leading to OOB access in hash
handling. A malicious or buggy frontend may cause the (usually privileged)
backend to make out of bounds memory accesses, potentially resulting in
one or more of privilege escalation, Denial of Service (DoS), or
  information leaks (CVE-2018-15471).

  In the Linux kernel 4.14.x, 4.15.x, 4.16.x, 4.17.x, and 4.18.x before
4.18.13, faulty computation of numeric bounds in the BPF verifier permits
out-of-bounds memory accesses because adjust_scalar_min_max_vals in
  kernel/bpf/verifier.c mishandles 32-bit right shifts (CVE-2018-18445).

  Other fixes in this update:
  * WireGuard has been updated 0.0.20181018

For other uptstream fixes in this update, see the referenced changelogs.
