Description of problem: by default, amarok cannot play mp3 files. due to phonon not being able to play mp3. perhaps the phonon-gstreamer cannot do it by default and the phonon-xine can? can we do something about this? a popup that allows to enable tainted? or a message saying we can install package X from repository tainted? Reproducible: Steps to Reproduce:
phonon xine is not maintained upstream anymore, if we change this will be for phonon-vlc ( if we ... ). But phonon-vlc is not yet ready from what coling told us.

No need for tainted, just install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly which is in core.
Source RPM: (none) => phonon
maybe phonon-gstreamer should require it after all
The issue about the dubious state of the gst plugins in -ugly will resurface... but in reality, in a best case scenario, the user gets a pop up from codeina or packagekit "you need package foo to play this stream, install it?" the user will in most cases select "yes" without examining what's getting installed too closely...
well, before i installed phonon-xine, i installed gstreamer -plugins-* including ugly and restested, but it didn't work still, then i installed phonon-xine, and changed priority, and immediately, it worked fine. tbh, are you sure phonon-xine is not maintained in upstream, i've loved xine, phonon-xine and it's apps... often, gstreamer is a bit of a mess imho. and well phonon-xine works perfectly... i see no reason to change this?
also ahmad, imho, about asking questions of the user, that's the users reponsibility, i have no problems if users violate it, remember that in europe there is no such problems, so at least for us i don't want to be too much of a hassle... i feel no need to restrict it, if the user chooses to do that or not, it's not our responsibility.
about phonon xine i am about 99% sure. see http://mail.kde.org/pipermail/phonon-backends/2011-February/000498.html

mp3 playback works OK here with -ugly installed. I wonder if you read all of my comment...
well, it didn't here, at least i didn't test thoroughly, it didn't reboot or anything, i remembered, it always used phonon-xine, and it switched. about the comment, it was a reaction on "the user will in most cases select "yes" without examining what's getting installed too closely..." is there anything i missed in your comment that i should've read better?

I added gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly as a suggest on phonon-gstreamer.
