So in summary : in first boot with pulseaudio enable it was working & after that you disable pulseaudio kmix crashed on start ? You did not answer on the media you used to install mageia, dvd or live-cd ?
> in first boot with pulseaudio enable it was working & after that you disable > pulseaudio kmix crashed on start ? I can't remember precisely, but I believe Kmix always failed. I tried uninstalling & reinstalling, but still fails. Do you want me to enable pulseaudio and try again? > You did not answer on the media you used to install mageia, dvd or live-cd ? Sorry - from DVD.
Well (In reply to comment #4) [...] > I can't remember precisely, but I believe Kmix always failed. > I tried uninstalling & reinstalling, but still fails. Strange . > Do you want me to enable pulseaudio and try again? Just before testing can you check your audio hardware setup in systemsettings ? (maybe it's not correctly configured) Also it would be nice to install debug package if you can like kdemultimedia4-debug, libalsa2-debug > > > You did not answer on the media you used to install mageia, dvd or live-cd ? > > Sorry - from DVD. Ok, it's just to try if i can reproduce. Colin,do you have any idea eventually ? :)
CC: (none) => mageia
Well, I've just booted up Mageia again (not using it usually), and found: (1) Kmix did NOT fail at Login (First time it has not failed) (20 Pulseaudio was ENABLED, not disabled, as I said earlier. Sorry. So I DISabled pulseaudio, Logged out and did Login again. Still no Kmix error. If I go into audio setup and do Test, I do hear music! Puzzling. On this same PC I have installed Mandriva 2010.2, PCLinuxOS 2010, SUSE 11.4, and Mageia-1. The only one I have had Kmix or any sound problems with is MAGEIA... What else can I do to help try to solve this riddle?!
So in summary you're not able to reproduce the crash ?
> you're not able to reproduce the crash ? Today, no. But the crash HAS been occurring from Day 1. I shall try daily logins to keep an eye on it, and will report here. As I said earlier, Mageia has been the only Linux where this has happened. (I still can't play audio CD's nor DVD's, but others have reported those problems.) My plan is to stay with Mandriva 2012.2 until Magiea-2 arrives, then install and try that as a successor...
Just booted up Mageia this afternoon. Heard 'Login' music then Kmix & KDE Daemon put out the usual 'Closed unexpectedly' failure messages - as reported initially. Sp - still the same problem, I'm afraid...
did you install the additional debug packages asked in comment #5 ? So we can have a better backtrace ? Did you changed the login music ?
> did you install the additional debug packages asked in comment #5 ? Not yet. Will do when I haeva slack hour or so... > So we can have a better backtrace ? I am not familiar with such things in this context. Please be explicit in what you would like me to do. > Did you changed the login music ? No - it's just the default standard Mandriva/Mageia Login tune.
(In reply to comment #11) > > did you install the additional debug packages asked in comment #5 ? > > Not yet. Will do when I haeva slack hour or so... Please note that you have to enable the debug repository for that. > > So we can have a better backtrace ? > > I am not familiar with such things in this context. > Please be explicit in what you would like me to do. By installing the debug packages we'll get more information regarding your crash & eventually reported it upstream of fix a missing requires etc etc The backtrace is the line you pasted in comment #1 especially the one regarding Thread 1
OK, I've now inst alled the 2 debug packages. Interestingly, after the doing Logout and then Login, Kmix did not fail. However, if I rebooted Mageia, then at login Kmix *did* fail - again. I don't know where the 2 debug apps have put their logs (tell me!), but here is the crash info from the KDE Daemon crash and the Kmix crash: KDE Daemon: Executable: kdeinit4 PID: 2007 Signal: Aborted (6) ========== Application: KDE Dæmon (kdeinit4), signal: Aborted [Current thread is 1 (Thread 0xb55c36d0 (LWP 2007))] Thread 2 (Thread 0xafc29b70 (LWP 2008)): #0 0xffffe424 in __kernel_vsyscall () #1 0xb60f4166 in poll () from /lib/i686/libc.so.6 #2 0xb5b842eb in g_poll () from /lib/libglib-2.0.so.0 #3 0xb5b73c16 in ?? I understand it got fixed, here a patch is mentioned https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=731381#c27 and later it says: "Package alsa-utils-1.0.24.1-5.fc15: * should fix your issue,"

No news yet on https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=692278 after I poked Jaroslav... regarding the "fix". Obviously a fix in alsa-utils cannot affect kmix so his original thoughts on the matter are likely (sadly) not true (either that or the same underlying cause is present in kmix, but I don't think so...)

Thx for explaining, Colin. So removing the PATCH keyword and resetting NO_PATCH

And please open a seperate bug report for the issue (and point to comments 19, 20, 21 of this one) and attach the backtrace there.

Experiencing similar backtrace to comment 19 and kmix crash at login in Beta 2 (currently pre-release) I'll create a new bug as I don't think Pierre did do.
This message is a reminder that Mageia 1 is nearing its end of life. In approximately 25 days from now, Mageia will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Mageia 1. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX (EOL) if it remains open with a Mageia 'version' of '1'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Mageia version prior to Mageia 1's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Mageia 1 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Mageia, you are encouraged to click on "Version" and change it against that version of Mageia. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Mageia release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. -- Mageia Bugsquad
Mageia 1 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on ''1st December''. Mageia 1 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Mageia please feel free to click on "Version" change it against that version of Mageia and reopen this bug. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed. -- Mageia Bugsquad
