Same for cauldron (and it would be logical to do the cauldron package before the mga1 one)
Comment 2 Michel Morisot 2011-08-03 21:33:17 CEST
hello,

No plan in sight, to offer an updated thunderbird to version 5? Given the new policy on the mozilla version, if it remains in 3.x, thunderbird may be out of date very quickly.
Comment 3 Florian Hubold 2011-08-07 15:39:58 CEST
Please be patient.

If you really want Thunderbird 5.0, you can easily download it directly from mozilla, and use in until the update will be there.

Comment 4 Marianne Lombard 2011-08-07 16:35:59 CEST
The 64bits build is not available in the mozilla website. And it requires to reinstall lighthning too (this add-on is arch-dependant).
Comment 5 Florian Hubold 2011-08-07 17:39:12 CEST
But it is available on Mozillas FTP ;)
http://releases.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/5.0/linux-x86_64/

Additionally you have the auto-update functionality, so you get new Thunderbird updates directly.

Please be patient. Argumenting does not make people work faster ...
Comment 6 Michel Morisot 2011-08-12 13:32:49 CEST
hello,

Ok, no problem. But pity there is no page on the various community sites mageia, showing the evolution of a particular project. In progress, wait, not provided ......

As Thunderbird 5.0 is planned or not??

For the "upgrade" in thunderbird I do not see it. It exists when thunderbid is installed via rpm?

thank you
Comment 8 D Morgan 2011-08-24 14:27:40 CEST
as long as thunderbird 3.1.* is maintained for sec updates this is not planned iirc.

Damage.

6.0 Thunderird taking the same appearance, that display equivalent firefox, it would have been a continuum.

Thank You
Comment 10 Michel Morisot 2011-08-24 19:02:20 CEST
On the site: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all-older.html, noted that:

Thunderbird 3.1.x will be maintained with security and stability releases for a short period of time. All users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to the latest Thunderbird release.

Branch 3.1 is still to disappear sooner or later...

Thank You
Comment 11 Marianne Lombard 2011-08-25 10:43:13 CEST
I understand that, as long as thunderbird 3.1.x is maintened, it will be available in mga1.

But is it possible to push thunderbird 6 in backports ? (for me, it will be ok with the policy)
Comment 12 D Morgan 2011-08-25 10:45:32 CEST
regarding comment #10 maybe we should move to TB6
Comment 13 Remco Rijnders 2011-08-25 11:09:06 CEST
As I understand the discussion in yesterdays packaging meeting the following applies:

- 3.1.* is the officially packaged thunderbird version for Mageia 1;
- 6.* or newer can go into backports as long as it doesn't break any dependencies, which I think it doesn't (but didn't check that);

The support question for backports still has to be agreed upon;

If 3.1.* is no longer supported by Mozilla while Mageia 1 still is, we'll have to come to a new decision.

I think it is wise that we provide 6 in backports, so that in the event that support for 3.1.* ends we already have a well tested alternative available that we can move to updates.
Comment 14 Florian Hubold 2011-08-25 11:16:49 CEST
Problem here seems unclear upstream policy:

For Firefox, when Firefox 5 came out, Firefox 4 was silently marked End-of_Life.
For Thunderbird, this is not really clear. Some comments on mozillazine mention that Thunderbird 3.1.2 could be the last, as it came out together with Thundebird 6.

So far i'm using locally rebuilt packages of Thunderbird 5 and 6 on Mageia 1, together with Lightning and they're working fine. I'm also for it, but not push it as backports, but as an update against Thunderbird 3.1.11 after 3.1.12 is out the door.
Comment 15 Florian Hubold 2011-08-25 11:18:03 CEST
I'm trying to get some comment from upstream how long 3.1.x branch will be supported.
Comment 16 Michel Morisot 2011-08-25 11:27:07 CEST
hello,

I just noticed that the message is no longer on Thunderbird 3.1.12 on the
mozilla website (see my comment # 10) and is no longer possible to download
version 3.1.12 except for some languages ââwhere version 6.0 is not yet
available.

Mozilla ftp proposed yet, but I think it feels the end of course Versions 3.1.x

And contrary to version 3.1.x and earlier, both 32 and 64 bits are available
(as in 5).
Comment 17 Florian Hubold 2011-08-25 11:50:04 CEST
Short answer from upstream developers:
Thunderbird 3.1 branch will be supported "for a period of time".

Long answer: It will be supported alongside Thunderbird 6 branch as long as the discussions around Enterprise support are going on. But Thunderbird 5 is already End-of-Life and new major Thunderbird releases will be coming every 6 weeks from now on.

Comment 18 Michel Morisot 2011-08-28 08:18:02 CEST
hello

And ?

The update is it planned for a mageia?

Thank You
Comment 19 Michel Morisot 2011-08-29 23:01:30 CEST
hello,

As I understand, Thunderbird 3.1 is held temporarily for the business world. The only question is now, is it a mageia oriented "enterprise" or "individuals". Does it has not suggested an LTS version, which I think is precisely oriented "enterprise". Is it wise to keep a version at the end of life in a public distribution.

Also version 6.0 is not already tested the users of the version "cauldron"; there any feedback from them?

Thank You
Comment 20 Florian Hubold 2011-08-30 00:02:21 CEST
There doesn't seem to be any feedback, but maybe this is because it's not broken in cauldron. But you could be right, nobody even noticed it would always be in english, even if a language pack was installed. And that for more than a week so there don't seem to be that much Cauldron thunderbird users, or they all have english systems.

Anyways, we need a decision for this one. We should discuss this in next packager meeting.

Then we should stay with the 3.1 branch "for a period of time".

So it looks like good news.

Yes, it is: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/all-older.html
Also as backports are not already opened, this report should be closed, because users should get newer Thunderbird release as normal update if 3.1 branch isn't supported anymore.

For reference, i'm maintaining Thunderbird, Anssi has just grabbed it for me as my mentor.
