The old ones are in ~/Desktop as Home2.desktop and trash.desktop, and the new ones are org.kde.home.desktop and org.kde.trash.desktop. All of the icons are functional.

Setting to blocker since can't be fixed easily afterwards and gives bad impression

Interestingly, I recently logged into KDE in my laptop's user account on Mageia 5, and this same issue happened. I hadn't logged into KDE with this account in years (perhaps as much as 10). I have been using IceWM with this account.
strange i don't reproduce in my 5 to 6 migration test. I will do more tests

If your Mageia 5 account already was using the org.kde.*.desktop names, you probably won't see it. I guess the account has to have originated from an older version that used the older names.
can you provide me a 'ls' of the desktop ?
I already provided the filenames in Comment 0.

Seeing this on a Plasma install from the x86_64 sta2 Classical iso, where I instructed the installer to format the / partition but leave /home alone. The M5 install had been a KDE4 i586 install. The same filenames as in Comment 0 are evident. I have no idea how old this particular /home may be. It's my usual practice to carry /home partitions through in this way when installing or testing a release, unless I have to make a substantial hardware change, like replace a hard drive. I always format my / partition, only doing upgrade installs from one release to another when I'm feeling particularly masochistic.
