I can't choose bépo in Mga 1 and I can't find anything in the changelog of drakx-kbd-mouse-x11-0.97-2.mga2 (for Cauldron) about this being fixed, so assigning to the maintainer of this package

No, it is not available after installation. I dont see it in "Keyboard Layout" list.

Yes, there are 2 versions :

 * Bepo, ergonomic, dvorak way
 * Bepo, ergonomic, dvorak way, Latin-9 only

The most used, I guess, is the first. The second one seems to be a restricted version of the first.

Unless I miss something: that's as expected, because the same keyboard.pm is used both inside and outside installer

It is a bit confusing that there is 

/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/bepo/fr-bepo.map.gz
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/bepo/fr-bepo-latin9.map.gz
and also 
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/dvorak/fr-dvorak-bepo.map.gz
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/dvorak/fr-dvorak-bepo-utf8.map.gz

but no fr-dvorak-bepo-latin9.map.gz
(so wondering what's used by KDE)

After reading https://linuxfr.org/news/le-bepo-en-console-inclus-de-base-sous-gnu-linux (in french), my understanding is that the layout was first included with files: 

/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/dvorak/fr-dvorak-bepo-utf8.map.gz
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/dvorak/fr-dvorak-bepo.map.gz

However, in order not to confuse bépo and dvorak, they were renamed as:

/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/bepo/fr-bepo.map.gz
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/bepo/fr-bepo-latin9.map.gz

So, we have:

fr-dvorak-bepo-utf8.map.gz (old) => fr-bepo.map.gz (new)

and

fr-dvorak-bepo.map.gz (old) => fr-bepo-latin9.map.gz (new)

I tried with adding 

"fr_bepo" => [ N_("_: keyboard\nFrench (\"Bépo\")"), "fr-bepo",   "fr(bepo)", 0],
"fr_bepo_latin9" => [ N_("_: keyboard\nFrench (\"Bépo, restricted\")"), "fr-bepo-latin9", "fr(bepo_latin9)", 0],

Both keyboards seem available in MCC, now.

After switching to 
 'French ("Bépo, restricted")', 
and then switching to tty2 (I guess X needs to be restarted to see the changes), when typing the first 6 letters (usually "qwerty") on my keyboard, I get "bépoè", but adding a space makes it "bépoè^"... so that doens't seem too bad.

However, switching to 
 'French ("Bépo")' 
does _not_ work.

There is an error:

     unknown keysym 'endash'

     lk_add_key called with bad keycode -1

I don't have time now to look further (and might miss the needed knowledge, anyway)

It worked fine for me. After selecting layout and disconnecting, I was able to type with my favorite keyboard layout. :)

I modified the file "/usr/lib/libDrakX/keyboard.pm" directly. Do you want I try with installing these packages?

Please do, installing the debuginfo package is not needed
(You can later downgrade them again with:
urpmi --downgrade drakx-kbd-mouse-x11-text drakx-kbd-mouse-x11 libdrakx-kbd-mouse-x11 )

When I started using Linux, it was hard to find a distribution that supported my keyboard. Mandrake supported it out-of-the-box, which is the reason I stuck with Mandrake/Mandriva/Mageia and also the reason that I'm very eager to see this bug fixed

Uhmm.... did you try after first setting the keyboard to something very different, e.g. Azerty or so, and seeing that Azerty worked?

If you tried while you were using the KDE Bépo setting, then (if you hit the same error as me) there is a good chance you were still using that one after logging out and back in. 

I only saw the error in the konsole, when starting keyboarddrake from cli, but always my original keyboard selection (tried with nl and us) stayed the same after setting "Bépo"

Yes, and I log out between each change.

No, I first disabled KDE layout settings and gone back to azerty.

I tested :

Bépo (KDE) => Azerty (system) => Bépo (system) => Azerty (system) => Bépo (system)

If I launch keyboarddrake from cli, I see the same error you reported, but that works well all the same.

So according to Vincent's input, 'French ("Bépo")' does work, but there's one of the characters of the keyboard layout that might not be recognised (the endash, i.e. â (U+2013 in Unicode)).

The patch is still way better than no working bépo layout IMO, well done Marja :)

Note that, to get those keyboards in the first keyboard choice screen in traditional installer, replacing:

 'fr'  => 'fr:89 qc:85 be:85 ch_fr:70 dvorak_fr:20',

with something like:

 'fr'  => 'fr:89 qc:85 be:85 ch_fr:70 dvorak_fr:20 fr_bepo:10 fr_bepo_latin9:10',

is needed, too.

I'll commit the changes when I find time (unless someone else is faster)

Thanks a lot for the tests :-)

I assume I forgot to switch to tty2 after seeing that error, but tested in the KDE konsole instead :-/ (I never logged out between tests)

I didn't manage to rebuild drakx-installer-stage2 with the new package, but the errors were the same as with the old drakx-kbd-mouse-x11, so I committed the package to cauldron, anyway.

It hasn't been pushed, yet.

Akien pushed it to cauldron a long time ago, and it's in cauldron drakx-installer-stage2 now.
I just started a tradional install in French, and the two French Bépo keyboards are available in the keyboard choice screen.

Status: NEW => RESOLVED
Resolution: (none) => FIXED
