Description Bert Aerts 2015-02-17 13:11:37 CET
Description of problem:

I used:
Mageia-5-beta3-LiveDVD-KDE4-x86_64-DVD.iso

The only bad impression of the install process comes at the end.
When it is ready, you need to reboot.
Then the screen starts flashing like hell for a few seconds.
Random white dot pattern. This was also the case with M5B2.
I have nVIDIA GeForce GT 650 M with proprietary driver.
At the end of install the screen should turn off !!
This looks very un-professional.

Comment 1 Bert Aerts 2015-02-18 12:35:59 CET
Once Mageia 5 beta 3 is installed on a USB external harddisk, shutting down this OS works fine. So only issue with installer.
Comment 2 Bert Aerts 2015-02-28 20:32:01 CET
I can get the same flashing screen disturbance on pressing CTRL-ALT-F2 when
/etc/default/grub
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
or
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=1024x768x32
instead of
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text
When pressing CTRL-ALT-F1 I again get normal KDE.

So probably the grub2 settings of the install medium are set no with "text"?
Comment 3 Samuel Verschelde 2015-06-01 19:05:53 CEST
Does this still happen with Mageia 5RC?

Comment 4 Bert Aerts 2015-06-04 21:40:27 CEST
Yes, it sill happens with Mageia 5 RC.

But I had to create a DVD to be able to boot M5 RC !!
The isodumper approach did not work, see
https://forums.mageia.org/en/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=9852

Please provide the output of lspcidrake -v and also attach your /root/drakx/report.bug.xz that was created during installation.

Sorry for the late response, I have been waiting for the release of 5.

I installed Mageia-5-LiveDVD-KDE4-x86_64-DVD on my laptop Dell 17R SE 7720.

The output of lspcidrake -v is

I don't have a file /root/drakx/report.bug.xz

At the end of the install, while going for a reboot, my laptop screen LEDs were flashing white randomly.

While shutting down Mageia 5 the same happens.

Therefore I changed
[root@Dell7720Mageia5 drakx]# cat /etc/default/grub
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text

This has 2 consequences: screen flashing does not happen anymore and while booting nothing is shown on the screen until the nVIDIA splash screen.

The command window when pressing CTRL-ALT-F2 gives a blank screen.

Sorry for the very late reply, we're short on active BugSquad members.
(Don't hesitate if you feel tempted to help us :-) )

Did you first start live mode, and install from there, or install straight from the iso's boot menu?

Adding (MGA5) to the whiteboard, because this was last seen with a Mga5 final live iso.

Do you happen to know whether this bug is also valid for Mageia6sta1?

The request to provide /root/drakx/report.bug.xz was an error, that file is only present after a traditional install.

For Live installs you could try whether
   journalctl -ab 1
(still) gives logs that match the time of install.
If so, then please attach journal.txt that is the result of
   journalctl -ab 1 > journal.txt

I'm wondering why it didn't happen before when shutting down 5beta3, even if it already occurred at the end of 5beta3 live install.

I guess you ran updates in both cases before shutting down? (If so, maybe an update fixed it??)

Thanks for providing a workaround :-)

That sounds like another bug. If you still get a blank screen in a fully updated system when trying to switch to tty2 or tty3 etc., then please file a separate bug report.

Comment 9 Bert Aerts 2016-10-18 17:36:56 CEST
I gave up on the fast evolving Mageia and switched to CentOS 7.2.1511 to have long(er) term stability. So I am not currently experimenting with Mageia 6.

But until somewhere in June (I think) I used CentOS installed on an external USB harddisk, because of the (very same as Mageia) screen flashing that happened when shutting down or switching to tty with CTRL-ALT-F2. But the workaround in Mageia did not help in CentOS.

But after a nVIDIA driver update, the flashing disappeared and I could switch to a working tty via CTRL-ALT-F2. At that moment I installed CentOS on my internal SSD and since then I am a happy user of CentOS :-)

I could not test if this driver update also solved the Mageia issue because Mageia does not provide nVIDIA updates and the (updated) script http://onse.fi/nvidia-mgabuild/ did not work at that time.

I am using CUDA & OpenCL and am very happy that CentOS provides via elrepo updated nVIDIA drivers !

To conclude: most probably the issue had to do with UEFI and was solved by nVIDIA so if Mageia 6 uses latest nVIDIA, it should be solved for Mageia as well.

Thanks for the feedback, Bert. So the blank screen when switching to tty2 has the same cause as the flashing screen issue

There have been many updates (including newer versions) of the nVidia proprietary drivers in cauldron
http://svnweb.mageia.org/packages/cauldron/nvidia-current/current/SPECS/nvidia-current.spec?view=log
and even three updates in Mageia 5.

Mageia 5 now has the packages provided by the
             nvidia-current-352.79-3.mga5.nonfree source rpm

Cauldron has nvidia-current-367.57-1.mga6.nonfree

Assuming this got certainly fixed in cauldron, but leaving this report open in case the current Mga5 version doesn't contain the fix.

Reassigning to the kernel and drivers maintainers.

Mageia 5 has officially reached its End of Life on December 31st, 2017 https://blog.mageia.org/en/2017/11/07/mageia-5-eol-postponed/
It only continued to get important security updates since then, but non-security bugs have no chance of still getting fixed.

Closing as OLD.
