Description Oliver Burger 2011-06-02 13:17:04 CEST
When trying to install the current version of google-picasa, you get an error about missing libesd.so.0 which is in libesound0 package on Mandriva.

Should we import it as backport after unfreeze?
Comment 1 D Morgan 2011-06-02 13:39:50 CEST
esound is deprecated so we removed it from mageia.

Maybe we could add back esound but only the runtime part, we will avoid building apps against it.

Comment 2 Ahmad Samir 2011-06-02 17:17:01 CEST
esound shouldn't come back, upstream picasa should adapt their builds and remove old gunk, IMHO. We shouldn't change our packaging to accommodate 3rd party packages...

Note that you can always use 'urpmi --allow-nodeps' to install picasa (not sure it'll load though, as esound maybe linked in the executable).
Comment 3 Real Name 2011-07-21 08:52:41 CEST
This old gunk as you call it is still used in major rpm distros such as Mandriva, Suse, Fedora etc, so since Mageia isn't the hub of the world probably Picasa will remain as it is.
Why is so critical to remove this small old but still useful package while you still keep true gunk packages in the repos?

@dubigrasu, I think Fedora have been pushing to remove libesound for ages, so please don't paint us as being backwards when we're being progressive. libesound has been deprecated for years. picasa should use libcanberra for it's sound needs.

I have some contacts at Google. I will ask them to get in touch regarding this. If we absolutely need to we can re-introduce libesound, but I'd really rather not as it's a dead technology :(
Comment 5 Real Name 2011-07-21 15:21:37 CEST
"backwards"?...no, not at all, really. I would rather describe it as going too fast forward :)
Dead technology yes, unfortunately for this moment in time it is still needed, a small use but true.
Maybe tomorrow Picasa will drop libesound, great, but right now this popular 3rd party software can be installed easily on almost every distro, but not on Mageia.
Comment 6 Colin Guthrie 2011-07-21 15:25:28 CEST
:)

I've spoken to my conterparts at Fedora and they too are wanting to remove libesd... it's been more laziness than anything else that's stopped this.

I've also been in touch with some Google contacts but am awaiting redirection to the right people.

From looking at things, the only need for esd in picasa is for the wineesd audio driver. I will encourage them to ditch this as it's really, really nasty generally and less than practical in 99% of use cases.

As the Picasa RPM from Google is just a self-contained Wine install, I'd expect that installing Picasa.exe under our wine would work just fine and also saves duplication of the whole of the Wine system.

""As the Picasa RPM from Google is just a self-contained Wine install""

Yes, but that's what made it reliable, it was already tweaked with dll overrides and everything, using a wine release that worked best. Also easier to install for everyone.
With regular wine it might work now and break at next release.

Anyway, I see you put things in motion, thanks:)

FYI, wine-1.3.25 has just dropped support for ESD altogether http://www.winehq.org/announce/1.3.25
Comment 9 Colin Guthrie 2011-07-23 22:04:11 CEST
@Ahmad: Nice :)

I've been copied in to an email with the right guy @Google to speak to about it. So I'll forward this on to him.

Not heard anything from them, but I'll poke them again.

What did you learn?

@ Oliver

You might as well assign this bug to yourself, for when/if backports are opened, no one seems motivated to import libesound0.

Or do you agree on closing it as wontfix?
Comment 14 Colin Guthrie 2012-01-23 10:41:36 CET
It's a somewhat moot point right now as http://picasa.google.com/ reports "Picasa is not currently available for your operating system"... so no Linux builds for us any more I guess.

I have requested via the medium of G+ that if they do spin a new Linux build, that they do it *without* libesound. Let's see if my various + contactes employed by Google will share it sufficiently to get to the right people :D
Comment 15 Remco Rijnders 2012-03-20 12:57:28 CET
Closing this report then. If the situation with regard to picasa changes, or other applications might require esound, this report can be reopened.

Colin, thanks for your efforts in trying to get google to consider us linux users.
