Description claire robinson 2014-01-07 12:46:28 CET
Classic 4RC DVD 64 with default XFCE installation

Installed with XFCE and had to answer the phone so left the machine after logging in. When I returned to it the screensaver had been running and the screen had then blanked and monitor switched to power saving.

I was unable to return from this. Switching to tty2 woke the monitor but tty only showed a blank screen with some occasional white corruption.

Entering the user password into this corrupt mostly blank screen changed it to a blue & red stripy corrupt screen.

See..

I'll attach the journal.

Previewing the screensaver in the preferences doesn't trigger the corruption

Comment 3 Jani Välimaa 2014-01-07 16:48:42 CET
Which graphic card?
Comment 4 claire robinson 2014-01-07 16:59:02 CET
nvidia with proprietary driver (nvidia-current)
Comment 5 Jani Välimaa 2014-01-07 19:00:00 CET
Could you also test with nouveau?
Comment 6 claire robinson 2014-01-07 22:27:38 CET
Did another install with nouveau and moving the mouse does bring the monitor back to life and after a few seconds cancel the screensaver, asking for user password.

The mouse pointer is frozen though. It is actually moving the mouse invisibly and right clicking in areas of the screen opens the menu in different areas as you would expect but the mouse pointer is motionless on the screen after returning from power saving/screensaver.
Comment 7 claire robinson 2014-01-08 08:01:43 CET
I guess this could be CVE-2014-0979 just patched by David, see dev ml this morning.
Comment 8 claire robinson 2014-01-08 08:18:39 CET
lightdm-gtk-greeter
Comment 9 Jani Välimaa 2014-01-08 09:15:15 CET
Can't figure out how this could be related to lightdm-gtk-greeter.

Unfortunately I can't this with real HW.
Comment 10 claire robinson 2014-01-08 09:17:08 CET
Isn't that what asks to the password when returning from the screensaver?
Comment 11 Jani Välimaa 2014-01-08 09:21:04 CET
Can't say for sure as I don't use locking with screensaver, but IIRC it's ugly xscreensaver window which asks password. A screenshot would be nice.
Comment 12 claire robinson 2014-01-08 09:23:52 CET
It's the default config for a clean install. I'll grab a screenshot though, it could be that.

Yes, you're right. It's the basic Xscreensaver one, so nothing to do with
lightdm-gtk-greeter.
Comment 14 claire robinson 2014-01-15 16:09:18 CET
Valid 4RC Classic DVD 64 with default XFCE installation.
Comment 15 Jani Välimaa 2014-01-15 17:53:05 CET
Is this also happening with other DEs + xscreensaver?

I can't reproduce this so this might be some HW and/or X related issue and not strictly tied to Xfce.
Comment 16 claire robinson 2014-01-15 17:56:27 CET
I've not seen it with any other DE, at least in default configurations.

I've just dumped dvd 32 onto usb so I'll see if it happens there too and check logs if it does.

It's valid from 4RC DVD 32 too Jani.

Attaching the journal. I had to mount a USB stick on tty2 as the network was also unavailable and scp wasn't installed.

Do you have access to the pre-release isos? I'll email you some access details if it'll help debugging.
Comment 18 Jani Välimaa 2014-01-15 19:42:12 CET
I have access to isos, but currently no real HW to test.

Would be nice if this could be also tested with another GPU than nvidia.
Comment 19 claire robinson 2014-01-15 19:44:37 CET
Alot use 20GB at the end of the HDD and dual boot for this testing.

Xorg.0.log

Adding xorg log too, looks like there may be some clues in there

Tested with real HW and can't reproduce with i586 and Intel GPU.
Comment 22 claire robinson 2014-01-17 18:54:15 CET
Think this is lightdm Jani. I experienced similar, corruption to the bottom half of the screen after installing from the DualDVD with nouveau.

I had to go out so let it reboot and came back to a blank screen, powersaving. Moved the mouse and it did come back but had corruption across the bottom half. I was able to see the login greeter and once logged in the corruption cleared.

After leaving the desktop to do the same it did return OK but the mouse pointer had frozen. It was still actually moving invisibly and clicks work but the pointer on the screen didn't move.

MrsB had asked me to check this (fresh install from dual pre-rc iso, round 10), but I got impatient while waiting for the screensaver to come, so I closed the lid of the laptop.
When I opened it again, it was impossible to get a screen back, finally I rebooted by just pressing the powerbutton for a long time.

I'll now wait for the screensaver/powersaving
Comment 26 Marja Van Waes 2014-01-17 22:37:06 CET
OK, didn't even see the screensaver (I was doing other things), when I looked at the screen just now it was black, but touching a key made it come back without any issues here... I did not have to give my password or so
Comment 27 Marja Van Waes 2014-01-17 22:56:31 CET
tried again, because I had forgotten to unplug the power cable. I had configured screen lock to pop in earlier, so this time I did have to give my password, but again no issues here.

maybe it is somehow video card related? this is on real hw and with an old intel video card

Removing from the Mageia 5 tracker as this has not been confirmed in Mageia 5 Cauldron.

Comment 30 Marja Van Waes 2016-06-30 09:32:50 CEST

Closing as OLD because no one reported reproducing this issue since almost 2½ yrs ago.

Please reopen if it's still valid in current cauldron or stable
