Description Michael Riss 2013-04-18 11:42:49 CEST
Description of problem:

I installed kernel-desktop-3.8.8-1.mga3-1-1.mga3 with the normal
automated updates and now I cannot boot it because it fails
during boot with a stack backtrace.
I think this happens before even mounting the root fs, at least
I cannot find any 3.8.8 messages with journalctl.

The older kernel-3.8.7-desktop-1.mga3 still works fine.

Oops, the initrd was missing. After manually regenerating
the initrd the kernel works fine now.

Now I try to figure out why the initrd was not generated ...
Comment 2 Michael Riss 2013-04-18 12:40:01 CEST
In /boot/grub2/drakboot.conf the entry was "boot=/dev/sdd" but in reality my
boot disk is /dev/sdc => automatic bootloader installation with initrd
generation failed.

I think this is because I installed the system from an USB stick which was
assigned to another sdX device during installation and pushed my boot disk from
sdc to sdd. After installation I removed the USB stick and my boot disk became
sdc again and the "sdd"-entry in drakboot.conf pointed nowhere.

Who to talk to about this problem? Seems to be an installer (drakboot?) issue.

I think this is likely fixed. There was a bug in the installer which meant it added the usb it was installing from in fstab etc.

Adding Thierry who knows more.

I don't even remember this bug anymore and installed and upgraded many kernels in the mean time, therefore closing this specific bug.
