Description Adrien D 2013-04-10 18:59:59 CEST
Hi team Mageia,

is it possible, before release freeze, to make an RPM package named for example nvidia-beta with the latest version of NVidia driver (319.12) ?

Why ? Because this beta driver works with Optimus NVidia cards.

Thanks

i hop to, but release date is close the 7 April.

Well, it requires 3 things to work:

1. x11-server 1.13.3 wich provides RandR 1.4
   - OK, we have that.

2. XRandR 1.4
   - OK, we have that.

3. Kernel 3.9
   - NOPE. we dont have that.

Then it's not a full optimus support, just a hybrid setup.

It also needs to use non-accelerated x11-driver-video-modesetting instead of x11-driver-video-intel for the intel part. It also pushes most of GPU work from the modesetting driver through RandR to nVidia GPU so wether it acctually can save any power compared to running the stable nvidia-current driver remains to be seen.

It's possible to include this when the kernel 3.9 will be released ?

Not in Mageia 3. But we have quite some time to test it before Mageia 4 :)

Kernel 3.9 is released.

On core update testing Mageia3 is it possible?
Comment 7 Sander Lepik 2013-04-30 19:03:24 CEST
Kernel version for Mageia 3 will be 3.8.
Comment 8 Adrien D 2013-04-30 19:06:03 CEST
6 months ago, Mageia 2 had kernel 3.3.8.
Now, Mageia 2 has 3.4.x

Kernel 3.4x had had on core/update_testing for a long moment.

Same thing for Mageia 3 ? Or keep it on update_testing and no release it ?
Comment 9 Sander Lepik 2013-04-30 19:09:33 CEST
Mageia 2 got 3.4 as it's LTS, 3.9 is not.
Comment 10 Thomas Backlund 2013-05-03 19:32:12 CEST
We'we just pushed final nvidia-current 319.17 as 319.xx is the new upstream long-lived maintenance driver..., so it's a good base for mga3

The release kernel for Mageia 3 will be 3.8.x

we _might_ provide a newer kernel later, but _no_ promises yet....

So closing as fixed :)

OK, Thanks TMB for the answer.

Can I install the latest nvidia driver on a Optimus Configuration with the last kernel (3.8.11) or not ?

It will be works ?
