Description DariuszSki 2013-04-06 23:16:14 CEST
Description of problem:

I did an install of Mageia3 Beta4, and cannot switch from the free Nouveau driver to nVidia.

Via MCC, switching the driver to the real nVidia driver, you log out, then the system locks up at the verbose text screen, needing a hard reboot (nothing relevant displayed at the verbose screeen).

If you reboot you get to a (timed) prompt saying the graphics driver has been changed, and the system will reboot [OKAY]. It is an infinite loop (I am not going to keep the computer on to make sure it is a infinite loop, but after three attempts it appears to be so). If you select [NO], then it carries on booting for another two seconds, then the system locks up.

The only way to restore the system, is to install the Beta4 again, BUT as an "upgrade" (not fresh install), so when you get to post install configuration, you can change the graphics card driver back from nVidia to Nouveau.

When you then reboot, the system boots normally to the desktop (but with Nouveau driver).

There are no log files as the system just locks up. However, I did notice in first few seconds of boot in verbose mode, there are mentions of Nouveau when you don't want to use that driver.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Mageia 3 Beta4.

The updated nVidia files just pushed out (Sun 07 Apr) did not help to solve the problem.

You don't have to remove nouveau when installing nvidia. But are you maybe using grub2? I think grub2 is still broken and it doesn't add nokmsboot when needed.

I was using grub2. The guides for grub2 are quite useless, but eventually tried the boot command line "e" to edit at the correct spot in the boot menu to add "nokmsboot" option. This solved the problem, but I cannot get it to save the option due to another problem which I've found, which will be a separate bug report. So I need to edit the boot every boot to add "nokmsboot".

So sort of fixed.
