Description bozonius 2013-03-09 11:37:47 CET
Description of problem:
While upgrading (under VirtualBox 4.2.8) from mga2 to mga3, an error is issued stating that the Xorg configuration file is broken and that the installer will ignore that fact.

After the install completes and the system is rebooted, the graphical interface (KDE) does not come up. The cauldron with bubbles appears, but then hangs. I've let it sit for about 15 minutes and nothing happens.

Tried booting into level 3 to see what is happening in depth. I run startx, and the last message I see before it hangs the system is an error about AIGLX (see 2nd image above)

The mageia 2 install was a simple install with all updates applied after completion of that install. I smoke tested it to ensure the system was (nominally) stable and usable; I assume that any issues related to mageia 2 are addressed elsewhere. No further configuration changes were made to it. Then the mageia 3 upgrade is applied using the ISO named below.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Mageia-3-beta3-i586-DVD.iso

How reproducible:
Very.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade a mageia 2 install to mageia 3
2. Accept all defaults, and continue on when the ppp error (see bug 9302) and X config file errors pop up
3. After reboot, system hangs

Reproducible:

I should probably also mention that my mageia 2 install was KDE only, from the Mageia-2-LiveCD-KDE4-Europe1-Americas-i586-CD.iso

I also note that this issue, revolving around DRI, seems to be a known problem and a bug was filed as recently as 3/1/2013 for it on archlinux, if that is helpful (e.g., https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1240690)

ddebug.log could have some info and maybe also Xorg.conf (old if you have it)

Examining the VBox logs a bit more thoroughly, I noticed on a previous run, when I shut down the VM, apparently it was just in the middle of an ICMP operation. See http://pastebin.com/cqAFdZbD. The system does not respond to keyboard or mouse inputs, but seems to be "alive" somehow? Or is that just a latent message that got flushed on the hard shutdown? I just thought this might be interesting.

Still getting this error installing to VirtualBox 4.2.10 guest on SL6.3 host.

This is during install of the Mageia-3-beta3-i586-DVD iso image.

Last messages in console 1 window indicate installer was executing xorg configuration and got a macro expansion error, due to too much recursion:

My VM is configured for 1GB. The recommended memory size is 512 to 2048 MB, so this should be adequate.

(appending to last comment)

console 3 window looks thusly: http://picpaste.com/0abd283f266e41273e0ddae1421431b6.png

And, no, I did not move or remove any files in the system. The only thing I did do was use console 2 to browse around a bit hunting for clues, such as these:

BTW, just to be clear, all of these screen shots are immediately upon the error. I have not yet proceeded to the reboot/hang yet.

Closing as OLD as the reporter hasn't provided the requested information. Please file a new bug if this problem persists in upgrading Mageia 3 to Mageia 4.
