Did you blacklist b43 (https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7828#c15) so that bcma can actually do its work?

Now I tried, and it didn't work. It should be(and it was) working out-of-the-box.
Comment 3 Sander Lepik 2013-01-28 22:37:46 CET
Are you sure that only bcma related modules were loaded? What does "it didn't work" mean?

>What does "it didn't work" mean?

It means I can't find the interface with network center, iwconfig, ifconfig -a, and anywhere else.

> Are you sure that only bcma related modules were loaded?
Yes, this is the result of lsmod:

There have been several bug reports recently that seem to be specific to BCM4312 rather than just Broadcom. I have a system with a BCM4313, and the free drivers work just fine.

If the older drivers are truly proprietary, were we shipping them in nonfree ? If so, what's the harm in continuing to do so and only using them in cases we know require them ? It seems like drakconnect and NM should be special-casing BCM4312, doing the blacklist, and selecting the correct driver on its own.

I can't see brcmsmac in this list. bcma should load it automatically, if it's not blacklisted for some reason.

Thats exactly the point of theese tests... for all that the free drivers work,
use that... for those that really still need broadcom-wl, we will re-instate that in the installer.

So theese 2 loaded...

Can you check dmesg output (or journalctl -b) for warnings/errors regarding the wireless...

I love open source drivers when they work, Mageia 2 was like a dream for my Inspiron 1564 (other than the bluetooth which never worked for me on any laptop in any distribution), in Mageia 3 wireless will not work without tinkering and the video card reduces the battery life to half because of (free drivers).

I couldn't find it too and it is not in the blacklist found in /etc/modprobe.d/
but I found a line in /biit/config says:
CONFIG_BRCMSMAC=M

Maybe I misunderstand. Are the proprietary drivers still in the distro ? Removing them doesn't seem to make much sense if it's known that some chips are going to require them.

Doesn't drakconnect have support for listing multiple driver choices, with the last one usually being ndiswrapper ? Why not list the free driver first, the proprietary one second, and ndiswrapper third, so as to allow users to fix this themselves rather than enter bug reports ?

Actually here ssb grabbed your wireless card:

> [ 33.719855] ssb: Found chip with id 0x4312, rev 0x01 and package 0x00
> [ 33.719997] ssb: Core 0 found: ChipCommon (cc 0x800, rev 0x16, vendor

> [ 33.720405] ssb: Core 3 found: PCI-E (cc 0x820, rev 0x09, vendor 0x4243)

Can you do:

echo "blacklist ssb" >/etc/modprobe.d/ssb-blacklist.conf

and try to reboot, does it change anything...

if not, install dkms-broadcom-wl from Nonfree, reboot and check if wireless is working...

and please provide the output of lspcidrake -v

Yes, they are still available in Nonfree section.

We are not removing them, but we temporarily removedany references to them in the installer now during the beta tests so we can get everyone to test out the free drivers so we have a better picture of how what to do for RC and final release...

Yes, we have the "ndiswrapper" option, but we need to rewrite / extend it to cope with several drivers...

Comment 16 Philippe Leblanc 2013-02-07 17:37:32 CET
I've been having issues using the free driver. My computer is equipped with the BCM4313 chipset and the correct modules are loaded (using BRCMSMAC through BCMA module). Since the switch to the free driver, I can still connect to my home wireless network, however link quality is horrendous. My connection speed vacilates between 2 and 6mbit (should be capable of 802.11n level speed, but I'd be content with 54mbit/s type of 802.11g protocols at this point). The link quality vascillates between 30 and 55% even though I'm about 8 feet away in direct line of site of the router. Of course, browsing is like molasses if it works at all.

dmesg reports

[ 11.072685] bcma: bus0: Found chip with id 0x4313, rev 0x01 and package 0x08
[ 11.072719] bcma: bus0: Core 0 found: ChipCommon (manuf 0x4BF, id 0x800, rev 0x24, class 0x0)
[ 11.072742] bcma: bus0: Core 1 found: IEEE 802.11 (manuf 0x4BF, id 0x812, rev 0x18, class 0x0)
[ 11.072784] bcma: bus0: Core 2 found: PCIe (manuf 0x4BF, id 0x820, rev 0x11, class 0x0)
[ 11.084738] bcma: bus0: Bus registered

So the free driver is indeed doing the work. Has anybody else noted major performance regressions using this driver on BCM4313 chipset?

Mageia 3 RC full update x86_64
wifi Broadcom BCM4313

When you use the free WIFI network drivers are and you can connect to them. But there is a big caveat. It works only when the power is off. That is, if the laptop is not being charged.
If you use the broadcom-wl network is visible, but the signal is very small. Even with the line of sight. Of course you can not connect.
The logs are always there

There kernel 3.8.7 and I was not able to set wl because of this. In repositories 3.8.8 and changes apply only after a restart. You understand that all go astray, because LiveCD
With an open log fire there exact same situation. From the network does not work.

There is now new sets of isos to test broadcom wireless configuration

And to make it more fun...
there is now 4 isos so you can test on both i586 & x86_64 and with
both Gnome and KDE4.

NOTE! the isos have "CD" in their name, but most of them are bigger
than 700M so you need a DVD media if you want to burn them,
otherwise I suggest to use a usb stick to boot from, using:

dd if=name_of_iso of=/path/to/usb/stick bs=1M

And to find the isos:

http://mirrors.kernel.org/mageia/people/tmb/mga3-wl-test/
http://ftp.acc.umu.se/mirror/mageia/people/tmb/mga3-wl-test/
http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/people/tmb/mga3-wl-test/

(and soon on any mirror carrying mageia people/tmb/mga3-wl-test/ tree)

if you go to Mageia Control Center -> Hardware -> Browse and configure hardware, does it then want to install a broadcom-*-config ?

if it does, can you then configure your wireless ?

If that does not work, you can try to install the broadcom-wl driver:

Mageia Control Center -> Software Managemet -> Install & Remove Software -> search for broadcom-wl-kernel-desktop586-latest and install it and its deps.

(or as root in a console, do urpmi broadcom-wl-kernel-desktop586-latest)

if you already had installed broadcom-bcma/ssb-config, it will tell you it will remove that due to conflicts, then let it do so.

can you now configure your wireless ?

Everything remains the same. I installed a URPMI. Network catches, but with the power on the notebook huge ping. And without it, too, is not a quality online. USB adapter everything works fine.
