Description dave pickles 2013-01-27 13:47:33 CET
Description of problem:
Installing Beta 2 from the DVD into a VM, accepting all the defaults, produces an installation with X but no Window Manager which cannot be logged into.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Beta 2 installer DVD.

How reproducible:
Repeated multiple times locally.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Setup a new VM using VirtualBox (eg on Mageia 2). VB will suggest a client disk size of 8Gb, accept it.
2. Install Beta 2 into the VM using the installer DVD ISO image. Take default display environment (KDE). Accept the default disk layout (3.6Gb for /, 3.8Gb for /home, 512Mb swap).
3. Installation completes very quickly, but KDE and other applications are not installed - no warning is given. On booting an XDM login screen appears but it is not possible to login.

Workaround:- use the custom partitioning option in the installer to give more space to /. Installation then proceeds normally.

This issue could be very confusing for someone trying Mageia for the first time. The installer should check that the planned installation will fit onto the disk (it already does this for custom installs) and possibly tune partition sizes if necessary.
