Description Pierre Jarillon 2013-01-21 14:06:42 CET
Mageia 3 beta1 (updated) with KDE

A *.mpeg video file is opened by default with audacity! audacity cannot read a video

The list of applications shows for mp4
- Vidéos
- Dragon player
- Lecteur mutimedia VLC

This is completely heterogeneous.
- Videos = totem multimedia player
- Dragon player = dragon multimedia player
- Lecteur mutimedia VLC = ok, this is accurate.

When VLC is installed, it should be the first in the list because it works always.
Totem and dragon can be better for some types of vidéos but for others they don't work. In case of doubt, VLC must be used. Mageia must just work in any case out of the box.

that is observation after a clean install ?
Comment 2 Pierre Jarillon 2013-01-22 10:26:11 CET
Yes, I have burnt a DVD and installed Mageia3 beta1 in a single partition avoiding any old configuration. I use KDE and the system is updated.

I burn always a DVD because I can found some problems which are not seen with an install from the network.

this is not a kde bug, as in the audacity desktop files it claims it handles such medias:

MimeType=application/x-audacity-project;application/ogg;audio/x-vorbis+ogg;audio/mpeg;audio/basic;audio/x-aiff;audio/x-wav;audio/flac;audio/x-flac;audio/aac;audio/ac3;audio/mp4;audio/x-ms-wma;video/mpeg;

or this list should be reviewed or we keep this current behaviour.

The list is good, as audacity can import audio from MPEG files. Now I don't know how the "open with" list is ordered, as i agree it could get the last installed application in the top of the list.

So closing for the audacity part :

Yes, audacity can get the sound of a mpeg file. But this is not the subject of my report.
Please, read carefully the title and all the description.

With beta2, I have always the same problem: Audacity is the default with a video mpeg, instead of the last choice. But this is only one example of the troubles.
The first choice must be always a valid video player. This is not the case.
When you click on a video, what do you expect? See a video or not?

This is a matter of order of choices, not a problem for audacity, just a problem for Mageia.

I have a set of videos on http://pjarillon.free.fr/docs/demos/ : Download them and try to open them with the default application. It *must* work fine in any case.
When you can read each of them with mageia (non free), you can close this bug report.

I need to spend at least a quarter of an hour to make all video work each time I install a Mageia for a user. This could be avoided and I hate to waste my time.

Pleae, read carrefully my reply : I know no way to define order of players in a system way. So the best way to always open with vlc, as you feel it is the best player, is to remove all other software that can open videos.

Still, I leave this bug opened if someone comes with a system wide solution...

I don't see this as a bug at all. It works as it is meant to work. As one installs software the default programs change. It could be argued that audacity should not claim to be a default for a video file and that arguement is reasonable. However having made the claim Mageia respects it. Is the reporter suggesting that programs when installed should not be able to change the defaults? Should vlc be default for all videos?

Reading this report, I understand that everything works as expected from a developer/packager pov, but from a user point of view it doesn't.

Assigning to all packagers collectively, in case someone is motivated to cook up something that'll ease things on users.

CC'ing documentation team, in case someone there feels users can be helped with better/more documentation.
