Description barry marchant 2013-01-11 04:24:49 CET
I have purchased a Realtek usb dongle. lsusb sees it as Obda:8178 Realtek Semiconductor Corp. Modprobe shows the following modules loaded for it :rtl8192cu, rtlwifi, rtl8192c common,mac80211, cfg80211, usbcore.

Much midnight oil has been burnt searching the web to get it going, without success. I see there have been other bug reports re this dongle.

MCC does not set it up correctly. Networkmanager gnome is not installed

ifup wlan0 says 'configured with a roaming daemon but isnt associated' and 'failed no link present'

Can it be made to work in Mageia2?

TIA
Barry

iwlist scan is working ?

>MCC does not set it up correctly. Networkmanager gnome is not installed

this mean nothing and for networkmanager: urpmi networkmanager and then be sure that the NM_CONTROLLED in the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-yourcard is set to yes

I installed nm then rebooted. iwlist sees wlan0 but only immediately after each reboot. ifup wlan0 is skipped because nm is installed and then iwlist can not see the router.

NM_CONTROLLED is set to yes.

If iwlist can see the modem then it shows in Network Centre but will not connect.

If I set NM_CONTROLLED to no then ifup wlan0 returns 'wlan0 is configured with a roaming daemon but is'nt associated' & 'no link present'

Go check out bug#2160. Just installing NM isn't enough if you're using KDE.

reinstalled mageia2 + pkgs for wifi.

checked bug#2164. I note it applies to caldron on a x86-64 but my problems are much the same. My system is Mageia 2 x86-32 running on a 64bit machine. 'iwlist scan' usually finds the link after a reboot but not after an attempt to connect using Network Center etc.

dmesg gives msg 'ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): link is not ready"

Is this unit known to work?????

thanks

Barry

It has problems with recent kernels. See:
