Description Frank Griffin 2012-12-11 15:58:59 CET
Like it says. The open-source version doesn't include USB support, which is available and free as in beer. It would be nice to have a full version available in nonfree.

I'm surprised nobody's asked for this before, so I won't be surprised if there's some good reason we haven't done it already....

seems we cannot redistribute them:

https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Licensing_FAQ

    Can I redistribute the VirtualBox binaries?

    No. The Personal Use and Evaluation License allows you to download the VirtualBox binaries for personal and academic use and for evaluation, but it does not give you the right to redistribute these binaries. So you may not put them onto your own websites or other mirrors. We do this because we would presently like to keep track of how many people are downloading these binaries.

and installing the extentions for having the full support is really easy.

Maybe number 2 in https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VirtualBox_PUEL

I can agree it would be nice to have a script to pull down the Extension_Pack,
and do something like

  _cnt=$(VBoxManage list extpacks | grep -c "Host Controller, ")
 if [ $_cnt -ne 0 ] ; then
   _name=$(set $(VBoxManage list extpacks| grep 'Pack no'); shift 3; echo $@)
   VBoxManage extpack uninstall "$_name"
   VBoxManage extpack cleanup
 fi

 _extpack_fn=$(ls -1 $_dl_dir/Oracle*Extension_Pack* 2> /dev/null | sort -V | tail -1)

 VBoxManage extpack install $_extpack_fn
 VBoxManage setextradata global GUI/MaxGuestResolution any

Assigning this package request to all packagers collectively. On a voluntary basis, one of them might want to integrate it to the distribution and maintain it for bug and security fixes.

You might also want to join the packager team to maintain this piece of software: see https://wiki.mageia.org/en/Becoming_a_Mageia_Packager

Doesn't look like it. From
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/VirtualBox_PUEL

"This VirtualBox Extension Pack Personal Use and Evaluation License governs your access to and use of the VirtualBox Extension Pack. It does not apply to the VirtualBox base package and/or its source code, which are licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public License “GPL”)."

From Section 3 of the License ...
"(2) You may not do any of the following: (a) modify any part of the Product, except to the extent allowed in the documentation accompanying the Product; (b) rent, lease, lend, re-distribute, or encumber the Product; (c) remove or alter any proprietary legends or notices contained in the Product; or (d) decompile, or reverse engineer the Product (except to the extent permitted by applicable law)."

The key part being "You may not ... re-distribute."

Closing this bug as wontfix. Feel free to reopen it if Oracle changes it's
license to one that allows the extension pack to be re-distributed.
