When gdm is used and gnome is not installed it is not possible to log in with xguest. On clicking on xguest, gdm immediately tries to log in with gnome without allowing the user to select any other desktop. The simple workaround of course is not to use gdm with xguest :=)
It appears to be two issues here from the above description (although I didn't try myself): - gdm doesn't allow the user to select other desktop (most likely another instance of Bug 3368, as xguest doesn't have a password). - gdm tries to log in into gnome (despite gnome is not installed), which should only happen when the first option in the gdm list of available sessions is gnome. That might be the problem.

Tracing the dependencies, gdm has a Require for gnome-settings-deamon which has a Suggests for gnome-session Does gdm really need gnome-settings-daemon as a Require?
