Description of problem: When booting off the Mageia 3 Alpha 2 Live GNOME CD-ROM, the installer still can not correctly identify the graphics card in a Dell C600 laptop. The installer chooses a MACH-64 card instead of correctly choosing a Rage 128 Based card. This has been the case since a few versions back of Mandriva and has been in Mageia since day 1. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Mageia 3 Alpha 2 Live GNOME CD-ROM How reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Boot Dell C600 off Mageia 3 Alpha 2 Live GNOME CD-ROM. 2. Wait until the "Sorry but there has been a problem starting your graphical display." screen appears. 3. Follow the above screen's advice and log in as root, run "drakx11", and change graphics card to "Rage 128 Based Cards". 4. Run "systemctl default" and GUI appears properly.
can you attach the output of lspcidrake -v ?

Manuel: Would you like that output before I manually tell it the correct graphics card or after? Thanks Jeffrey Bruton
It doesn't matters: that output wont change

Thierry: For some reason now, after many attempts, I can't get into the GUI at all booting off the above mentioned live CD-ROM. Basically just hangs now at a blank screen...but it still shuts down nicely when I press the power button once, indicating the system is up, just not showing any GUI. Also I can go to another console (F2, F3, etc.) and login fine. It would be way easier for me to boot off the HD which has Mageia 2, and then get you the output Manuel mentioned. Is that an OK method or does it need to be running Mageia 3 in order to get the output you are looking for? Thanks Jeffrey Bruton

Even though the install may be correctly choosing the driver based on the hardware probe, it still doesn't work and needs to be changed to the "Rage 128-based cards" driver...however in light of the above, its probably not the installers fault. Please let me know if you need any more information. Thanks Jeffrey Bruton

Thierry: Forgive my ignorance. What is "SVN"? Thanks Jeffrey Bruton
This is the history repository of our software. http://svnweb.mageia.org/soft/ldetect-lst/trunk/ It has now been released. You can now try the latest installer. eg: http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/Mageia/distrib/cauldron/i586/install/images/ boot-nonfree.iso 07-Dec-2012 03:30 50M boot.iso 07-Dec-2012 00:19 34M
