Description Frank Griffin 2012-10-17 17:59:05 CEST
I'm afraid there isn't much to include here.

Start a fresh install, select Custom desktop, check every box except Individual Package Selection.

The panel that should show either the adverts or the details comes up, but it never fully paints itself. If you switch to tty3, text is going by practically too fast to see, but from what I can make out, it is trying to install postgresql-server and then issuing a message about requires something but it's in the skip list or blacklisted (it's very hard to read).

If you CTRL-ALT-DEL and boot a rescue disk, there's a ddebug.log, but the last entries just say that it's leaving the Format Partitions step. I'll attach a screenshot.

The same failure occurs if you check all the boxes *including* Individual Package Selection, and you never get the IPS panel - it drops into the loop first.

However, if you check everything *except* the Database category, the install works fine.

Could you provide the file /root/drakx/report.bug.gz as an attachment ?

Comment 4 Frank Griffin 2012-11-01 17:27:45 CET
Here you go. By the way, this time it never even got to Package Selection, and it wasn't PostgreSQL it was complaining about, but just about every package.

report.bug

This file is equal in size to the floppy image on the loopback, and gives I/O errors at around 729K. This is the first 729K.

This is still happening after today's cauldron update, and I don't understand why, considering the current alpha ISOs were cut after this started happening in cauldron and are now available for testing. Is the alpha not just a snapshot of cauldron ? How can this be happening in cauldron, but not in the alpha ?
Comment 7 Manuel Hiebel 2012-11-28 23:27:56 CET
I guess still old bug is not valid anymore ?
Comment 8 Frank Griffin 2012-12-10 18:34:39 CET
Nope, this is still happening today.

Comment 10 Thierry Vignaud 2012-12-11 14:16:42 CET
Please clarify: are you trying to go the individual packages step or are already past this step, trying to install postgresql???
Also you ddebug.log only shows that old libreoffice couldn't be selected (bug#7890).
Please try again, when you see your error:
- plug a USB key
- go to console 2
- type the "bug" command
- attach report.bug.xz from this usb key here

The loop occurs whether you check Individual Packages or not, showing that it occurs at a point in time before the Individual Packages dialog kicks in.

It does not occur if Database is unchecked. The only reason I tried Individual Packages was to see if it would occur if I specifically de-selected postgresql (which most of the errors on tty3 mentioned), but it never got that far.

I'll try the USB approach, but because of the USB limitation on VBox, it will have to be a real hardware install.

Summary: Fresh install loops in Package Selection => Fresh install loops in Package Selection if "Database" is selected

Comment 13 Thierry Vignaud 2012-12-13 10:08:10 CET
I fail to reproduce (clicking on "unselect all" then checking "Databases").
Please try reproduce with beta1.
Comment 14 Thierry Vignaud 2012-12-13 10:43:34 CET
I would say it was a temporary glitch in postgresql9.2.
Funda WDYT?

Comment 15 Frank Griffin 2012-12-13 12:36:46 CET
It seems to be some kind of circular dependency among the full set of packages. To reproduce, you have to check *everything*.
Comment 16 Frank Griffin 2012-12-20 15:54:57 CET
This has now changed. You no longer even get to package selection. It loops trying to find available packages.

From what's flying by on tty3, it looks to have something to do with libreoffice-writer.

I'll attach a new report.bug.

Comment 18 Thierry Vignaud 2012-12-20 18:13:30 CET
Yes, we've issue updating libreoffice.

Did you got the KDE/GNOME selection screen?
Comment 19 Frank Griffin 2012-12-20 18:31:15 CET
Nope. just "Checking already-installed packages" followed by "Looking for available packages". If you flip to tty3 and back, the GUI doesn't repaint.
Comment 20 Thierry Vignaud 2012-12-21 12:38:10 CET
I failed to reproduce, using drakx-in-chroot (install not upgrade), I got
KDE/GNOME/custom choice then group choice then package install with
libreoffice-writer being unselected due to missing requires)
Comment 21 Frank Griffin 2012-12-21 13:28:37 CET
I don't understand. You can see all of the activity related to libreoffice-writer in the report.bug, and I let this sit and churn for about 30 minutes. Doesn't the log activity give any hint as to what's happening ?

I'll try again today, in case something changed.
Comment 22 Frank Griffin 2012-12-21 19:18:21 CET
Still looping today.
Comment 23 Frank Griffin 2012-12-21 19:19:34 CET
Oh, and just to rule out dependencies that might have been introduced by checking nonfree and tainted, I left them unchecked this time with the same result.
Comment 24 Mike Rambo 2012-12-21 19:50:09 CET
I have just downloaded the beta 1 x86_64 boot-nonfree.iso and am seeing the same thing. tty3 is looping on libreoffice-writer. Looks like this is because of missing libraries. I never get to the kde/gnome screen. The first time I saw this I had all the repos checked but this last time I left that screen at it's default.

Comment 25 Frank Griffin 2012-12-21 20:05:27 CET
I just reproduced this in a VBox VM, so it's not specific to the hardware in the system I was using.

In trying to rule things out, it can't be lack of memory (this box has 16GB), nor lack of disk space (the install partition is 30GB, and most of the rest of the 300GB drive is free space).

The only other variable I can think of is language set, maybe some weird dependency loop with some of the libreoffice language packs but not others.

I originally got this with just English - American selected, but I tried and got it with English+French+German+Italian+Spanish. Theirry, out of curiosity, what language set did you use with drakx-in-chroot ?
Comment 26 Thierry Vignaud 2012-12-21 20:50:43 CET
In all cases, you always used the beta1 ISO (I'm using the full network media)?
Comment 27 Frank Griffin 2012-12-21 23:26:08 CET
No, in all cases I was using the full network media from a local copy of distrib-coffee sync'd several times a day.

Mike Rambo was using the beta1 iso.

The OP in bug#8596 has discovered (and I have verified) that if you de-select the Core 32 repository in the repository selection screen, the loop does not occur.
Comment 31 Manuel Hiebel 2013-01-13 15:57:57 CET
new libreoffice is now on mirror, you could maybe try again.
Comment 32 Frank Griffin 2013-01-13 23:08:00 CET
My pleasure, as soon as the repo's settle down to a dull roar.
Comment 33 Mike Rambo 2013-01-14 18:21:53 CET
Looks fixed to me. I tested 64 bit beta 1 boot-nonfree.iso with all repos enabled. It is no longer looping on libreoffice and the installation is proceeding as I type.
