Description Peter D 2011-04-10 04:52:24 CEST
Description of problem:

Installation proceeds normally, then on first boot there is a black screen. There is a cursor in the top left corner. NumLock and CapsLock cause the keyboard LED to change. Control-Alt-[1-12] key combinations do not do anything. Ctl-Alt-BackSpace does nothing. Ctl-Alt-Delete causes a reboot.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Mageia Beta one i586 DVD

How reproducible:

One machine works. The other machine failed twice out of two attempts. (The hardware works with Mandriva 2010.2) It failed both with a boot DVD and the iso on the hard drive and it failed after installing directly from the DVD.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install
2. Boot

There are errors in Xorg.0.log (no devices detected) and dmesg, but they seem to refer to partitions not in use (then test installation is entirely on partition 10). I will attach those two files.

[root@live log]# lspci -s 1:00.0 -n

[root@live log]# lspci -s 1:00.0
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT200 [GeForce 210] (rev a2)

The errors in dmesg (audit: name_count maxed, losing inode data: dev=00:05, inode=6409) have not re-occurred.

Also only got the login prompt rather than the graphical display with the nvidia-current driver. And still failed after updating kernel and driver (and everything else).

I suspect that this is a manifestation of bug #904, but I will have to do another fresh install to find out - and this is my main machine that I use for other things. It might take a few days, but I will try to find out if the nouveau driver is subject to the same bug (and fix) as the nVidia driver.

can you test with mageia 1 Beta2 please ?

Sorry for the delay.

Beta 2 booted into a graphical display. :-) And it still worked after installing the closed source driver.
