Description of problem:

On booting when I get the the grub screen the keyboard does not respond and booting proceeds with a timeout on the default option

The keyboard is a Cherry/Cymotion

always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. boot 
2. at the grub screen try to select an other boot option (down arrow key)
3. no other option is selected (caps lock doesn't light up)

Could you go through the BIOS settings of your motherboard, there's usually an option about enabling support for usb keyboards, if there's such an option, please make sure it's enabled then try again.
